    NFL Discussion

I've never really been a fan of the NFL but this season I'm getting into it. I've watched a few games here and there of week 1 without still completely understanding the rules, but hey, I'm getting there.

Does anyone suggest which team to support throughout the season. At this point I'm thinking of following New England since I support the Boston Celtics in the NBA. What NFL team assimilates with and resembles WB the most?

Depends on your definition of the Bulldogs.
If you want a club with a tortured history pick the Buffalo Bills.
If you want a club the community is completely wrapped up in pick the Green Bar Packers.
If you want a young team with a high powered offense, maybe the Houston Texans.
If you want a chance to win a Superbowl, stick with your original choice of the Pats.

I support the Cincinnati Bengals after i watched and NFL review on their season in 2006. They were an up and coming team who achieved some success but were brought down by a knee injury to quarterback Carson Palmer. They've never won a Superbowl. This reminded me of the Doggies struggles with knee injuries.

Since then they've only gotten worse.

Personally I don't really understand the game but consider myself a Bengals fan. My husband and son are huge Cincinnati Bengals fans. Unfortunately they didn't get off to a good start last week with their first loss for the season.

I went to see New York Jets and the Miami Dolphins in New York last December. It was an amazing spectacle. Much different to watching it on television. Cindy Lauper sang the National Anthem and the crowd really get in to it. Then they just keep drinking and drinking. I've never had to stand up so much at a game before to let people through. My kids absolutely loved it especially when the guy sitting next to me commented on my daughters Western Bulldogs jumper she was wearing! Not many women or children attend games - mostly a male dominated crowd I thought. It was quite expensive and not so easy to get seats but I was lucky enough to get some and didn't care how much I paid. The experience was worth it.

Am hoping to travel to Cincinnati to visit the Paul Brown Stadium and watch a game there.

Go Bengals! Go Bulldogs! May both our futures be brighter!

Aside from the colours, the Pats are nothing like the Dogs, in the sense that they are very successful, and very, very smug. Think Geelong.

If you want a team like the Dogs, go with the Bills. They lost the superbowl 3 years in a row despite clearly being the best team (a la the Dogs in 97-98), their colours are red, white and blue, and they recently picked up a talented, but very brash wide out in Terrell Owens (Aker). They also might not be too bad this season.

Whatever you do, don't support the Dallas Cowboys. That'd be like barracking for Collingwood.
Despite the fact that they are in the same division as my team (the Detroit Lions) and have caused them much pain over the years (who hasn't), the Green Bay Packers are a good choice. Based in a fairly small town and owned by the local community they are also on the way back up.
New England are a team who were a joke for years and turned it around to be one of the more successful teams of the recent era. They're also from Boston which is a great sporting town.
Other good reasons to support teams are the following:

New York Giants-regularly successful and the more stable of the NY teams
Cleveland Browns- a long history and they wear Brown and Orange (they lose a lot though)
Philadelphia Eagles - never won a Super Bowl but they do have the meanest supporters in the sport
Pittsburgh Steelers - Won the most Super Bowls in NFL history

              Teams to avoid:
Detroit Lions -went 0-16 last year, enough said
Cincinatti Bengals - schizophrenic underachievers who always somehow find ways to lose
Oakland Raiders - the craziest, oldest, most meddlesome owner in NFL keeps them stuck to the bottom.

But hey watch some games see who you like but be careful, I fell in love with a running back named Barry Sanders and now I'm stuck with the worst team in the sport.

Mainly because of the colors I jumped on the Patriots many years ago when they were the easy beats of the competition.

The Eagles are awesome, they have dirty fans and just signed an Mike Vick who just got out of jail.
The Bengals as suggested are full of criminals, they draft a guy in the 2nd (in a much deeper draft compared to the AFL) who was a rapist a couple of years ago, and while they have gotten better the last year or 2, they sill have quite a few arrests.

This round, summed up alot for Buffalo and the Bengals. The Bengals lost on a last minute miraculous deflection for a TD and Buffalo where up by 11 with 2 minutes left before losing 25-24

                          Re: NFL Discussion

Sentimental faves for me are the 49ers, as my late father grew up in the bay area and was a long suffering 9er's fan when they were the laughing stock of the league from the 50's all the way through to the early 80s'. When they won their 1st SuperBowl in 81, and remembering how much it meant to my father- it makes me envisage how I'll feel when the Dogs finally win one.

I kind went off them a bit when they became perennial contenders through the 80's to mid 90's, but I've warmed to them again as they've become the battlers.
They've had constant problems finding their next franchise quarterback ever since Steve Young retired a decade ago, and I liken it to our problem in drafting quality talls.
Only 4 or 5 years ago they had Number 1 picks and spent it on QB Alex Smith who to date has proved a total bust and is no longer starting.

They now have a Defensive Legend of the game in Mike Singletary as their head coach, and he was a fantastic middle linebacker during the 80's for the Bears during their Super Bowl year in 85, and their are hopes he is going to rebuild the club over the next few seasons.

I also have a soft spot for the Ravens and the Browns as both cities lost their clubs in the 80's and 90's.

Baltimore were originally the Colts, who moved to Indianapolis. Whilst the Browns lost their team in 96. The owner of the original Browns was granted a license to start a 'new' team in Baltimore, and Cleveland was promised a new team in 3 years when the new stadium was built. So both cities ended up reclaiming their place in the league.

I also don't mind the Packers given the fact that despite the fact they are a minnow in terms of city size (only just over 100,000 people in Green bay) and finances, they have (in part due to the equalisation policy of the league) still been able to carve a successful franchise and have promoted themselves as a community club. I think the club is actually a Publically owned company, and not owned by a rich benefactor like most (if not all) other clubs in the NFL.

So I kind of fell away with watching the NFL last season. I struggled to understand the game and gave up. It's so technical compared to footy, basketball and soccer. I'm going to try again. I've narrowed my team of support down to:

New England Patriots - Because I love the Celtics and they sound like a pretty good team
Green Bay Packers - Because they are a community owned team
Buffalo Bills - They are red, white and blue

I need to make a decision! Any ideas based on the upcoming season?

Also, does anyone know a good place to find information or a video that explains all the rules and technicalities of the game!

I worked with a bloke from Boston; since then I have always followed the Red Sox and New England Patriots. To the point that when My wife and myself went to America our trip was based around going to live games of both. (that was the year that the Red Sox lost to the Giants in the play-offs ... The slogan on the back of everyone's car was Reverse The Curse ... Being the curse of the Bambino ... Babe Ruth ... The Red Sox hadn't won the world series since selling Babe Ruth to New York)

when we watched the Patriots I was in awe of Tom Brady ... Absolute incredible arm with great accuracy and a sensational 'with-it-ness' to know exactly what was going on around him.

So needless to say, I recommend The Patriots ...
