If you were Katich though, you'd rather play 80% fit rather than give Hughes another shot at opener. What if Hughes scores 2 hundreds this test?
No one should be playing if they are only 80% fit. Katich is going to get his spot back no matter what and Hughes has plenty of time on his side to get back in the team permanently.

Well how can Ponting hold his spot in that case, there is no way known he is 100% with that elbow, i'm not making excuses for him for his recent poor form with the bat, but it has to be hindering him to some extent.
Should Ponting sit this test out given it's a dead rubber anyway?

IMO he shouldn't have played in Melbourne. Not sure how fit he was for Sydney, but if he is still being hampered he shouldn't have played. I doubt Ponting would want to sit out of a test in his home(former) state.

Possibly but very doubtful. The senior players don't like giving up their spots regardless if a game is important or not.

No one would like giving up there spot no matter who but if your injured your injured, IMO its the chance to play a few players on the fringe and the chance for injured players to recover, it is a dead rubber use it to take advantage not the chance for players to do more damage to themselves.

They also have their reputations to hold as well, and someone like Ponting isn't going to lose his spot if others come in and perform, and as chef said, he probably wouldn't want to rest up playing in Tassie.
That said, Damian Martin is still troubled with complications years on with a similar type injury to the elbow or around that area of his arm, so i'm sure Punter would also have that at the back of his mind.
