I guess Hussey has made the most of his chances with some career saving innings which probably only leaves North as the vulnerable one. If Katich comes in for North is Hughes the right man to have in the side?
No. He looks like he has already been worked out by bowlers and is really struggling.

Innings is shaping up similar to when Hussey and McGrath had a 100 run partnership and South Africa set bizarre fields in 05/06.

      50 partnership up.

I don't understand the modern captains thinking in setting these 'in-out' fields. Just gifting runs to the opposition and allowing them to play a risk free game.

I've simply come to the conclusion that a physiological talent for hitting the ball or landing it on a spot on the pitch with pace or spin does not also automatically mean an aptitude for intelligent or creative thinking. Most of these guys would struggle to answer ten questions in a basic knowledge test -- or spell -- but we expect them to be able to think quickly and independently on the fly and be tactical innovators.

Other than rare exceptions (Taylor was one, Clarke -- who, for all his numbnutsness is actually quite a smart bloke -- looks like he may be another), most captains are prisoners of orthodoxy, groupthink or current trends rather than real-time improvisers.

Perhaps the NFL has it right after all in (in most cases) letting the head coach, who is in the job for his intellectual/tactical aptitude, be the one making real-time tactical calls (in consultation with their quarterback) rather than relying on individuals who are in the team for their physical attributes.

If Pakistan crumbles in the last innings and we somehow win this Test, was it still a bad idea to bat first?

Well, according to the great man Warney you bat first always no matter what the situations.

Hopefully we can now get at least 200 plus in front, and those nasty little demons will start creeping into the Pakistani's minds, and again, this will be Hauritz's time to shine again, on his home turf, going to make for some inrteresting cricket, whichever way the games goes, game on!

Butt has just had a LBW reversed on video evidence -- clear inside-edge onto his pads.

If the video has done nothing else all summer except reverse that clear howler I still think it's done it's job.. at least it ensures that it will be the players and not the umps who will be deciding the result of a Test.

Wobble wobble. Pakis 3/51 - almost an even money game.

If we get another quick one, Australia will probably win.

If Umar stays around for an hour, Pakistan will probably win.

EDIT: Uh oh! Let’s see if the Brother’s Akmal can bring Pakistan home.

6/103 - Kamran Akmal has been the best player for Australia in this test

Pretty insipid choke on a belter of a day 4 batting track, which is more like a day 3 track because of the early rain. Plenty of teams have failed to chase down small 4th innings totals in the past but not in such good batting conditions.

Pakistan is the cricketing equivalent of Fremantle.

                                Re: Australia vs Pakistan

Losing 10/105 (after being 0/34) on a belter of a pitch is very Fremantle-esque. It's plainly obvious that the Pakis don't play anywhere near enough test cricket these days - apart from Umar, nobody else was able to last more than 31 balls in this innings in terrific batting conditions, that is just shocking application with the bat. They did the same thing late in their 1st innings as well to give the Aussies a sniff of getting back in it. Some good bowling (and great catching) by the Aussies today but nearly all of the wounds were self-inflicted.

I reckon the effigy market in Karachi and Lahore will be booming tomorrow, most of them with Kamran Akmal's head on them.
