This young bloke is doing alright:

Pete Handscomb hit 233 in a second XI game yesterday for Victoria and got a 70 odd in the Shield match just finished.

Just watching Maddinson, hes not far away from being good enough, for a young guy he has most of the shots, immensely talented. Same goes for Lynn who I think is just about ready to go

Does Peter George still count? He is about 25 or 26.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

Just at the end of the article when Berry mentions the need for a wrist spinner and that "we have some good ones bubbling away in youth ranks" I have a feeling he may be talking about young James Muirhead. Just thought Id give a head up for the future, James is an 18 year old legspinner, an Altona boy who's playing firsts at St Kilda and taking wickets. He recently played for the Australian U/19's in India and has trialled with both South Australia and Victoria (taking the big scalps of Dan Christian and Michael Klinger, on his was to 4/19 off 4). I have played a lot of cricket with James, we came through juniors at Altona together and go to school together, so I can vouch for his undoubted talent but what hes doing at his age is terrific, its a long way to go but who knows. Just a name to remember, especially as a western suburbs boy.

Is he your 'loopy' style leggie or a 'grip and rip' type?

Definitely a grip and rip type turner which is encouraging for a kid of his age. He's no dart thrower and genuinely turns the ball but a lot of kids you see really have a problem with being too slow through the air which isnt really a problem for Jimmy. His progress in what is only his second year at St Kilda is staggering from the bowler I saw leave Altona.

Hes currently up in NSW with the Vic team, did a bit of training and having a squizz at the paper dismissed Glenn Maxwell in district cricket on the weekend.

Good to hear. No good being 'flighty' unless you are Shane Warne. Sounds a great prospect. 18 y.o in his second year at such a good Club as St. Kilda, and still progressing, is a very big effort.

Years ago we had a very very promising leggie from here in South Gippsland, went to St. Kilda at a very young age, but lost his way due to off-field behaviour. I hope your boy has a good support network aroundhim; coming from inner West will be easier than a kid coming down from the bush.

On a side note, does CA still have a spin coach at the Academy?

Just on the young local boy James Muirhead, he made his debut in the futures league against the Queenslanders and returned figures of 5.1 overs, 5 maidens 1/0, picking up the scalp of Luke Feldman. Keep in mind this is a kid doing his year 12 exams, playing in a game featuring the likes of Alex Keath, Chris Lynn and Chris Swann

Another update, Jimmy took 6 fa yesterday and Peter Hanscombe made 170 odd in the same side

On debut Kurtis Patterson for NSW an 18 year old, came out and smashed 157 off 189 balls in the shield game against WA. He is the standout batsmen in his age group, had a great tour for the Aus U/19's and is second on the NSW grade runs table. Great debut with a strike rate at 83 while Katich also made a ton with a rate at about 40.

Apparently he broke Maddinsons record for youngest player to hit a ton on debut.

They were talking about him on Inside Cricket and made a good point around if he would have been picked in any other state. I often read people stating that there is a bias towards the NSW players for Australian duties however, they bring in young talent all the time whereas last year the Vics were still playing Cleary, Wright and DPattinson with the ball and going back to Quiney for a batsman.

You could add Hodge to that list, I suppose it comes down to the old arguement in second grade sport , are you playing to groom or playing to win?

Victoria probably has the same rule as Australian team has the last 5 years, goes with the safe option, somewhere along the line it catches up though.
