Re: London 2012 Olympic Games Thread

What are people's least favourite Olympic sports?

I don't think tennis or soccer should be an Olympic sport. This event is the culmination of 4 years of hard work and sacrifice and should be the pinnacle of achievement. For those two sports, the Olympics has no meaning compared to other major events.

I also think that if you need a boat to compete, you shouldn't be in the Olympics
Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.

I think both were very early editions to the Olympic game.
Dont think Soccer was ever not part since added while tennis has come back.
Agree on tennis, with soccer being an under 23 comp it makes it somewhat more palatable.

Synchronized diving, rhythmic gymnastics, bmx are some of mine.

I don't rate water polo, but acknowledge its place in the games and popularity in Eastern Europe.

Dressage seems stupid to me. I like the jumps and cross country though.

          Tennis has no place.

My favourite conversation topic every 4 years!

Synchro swimming, equestrian (all of it), rhythmic gymnastics (I call it "PMP for Grown-Ups" - teachers and parents might get that!)

BMX is ridiculous. Sailing I just don't get as a 'sport'. I think Beach Volleyball should only be an Olympic sport in cities where people frequent the beach (Rio, anyone?)

I don't agree with the Tennis calls though. It's a great sport. I'm not a fan of Futbol (my school teaches Spanish as a second language!) but acknowledge its world popularity.

A couple of days in Great Britain still without a gold medal yet. They would want to finish very high in the medal tally as the host nation.

Yep, they were torn apart by the media. Very sad really. Personally I didn't feel 'let down' by our mens relay team and I didn't 'have to come to grips with them not gettting a medal' as Fox Sports News seemed to think.

Was thrilled with Christian Sprenger's reaction at getting silver in the swimming yesterday. He was really happy. It's a shame that Emily Seebolm isn't enjoying her silver medal though. Just goes to show how much pressure they put themselves under, and the amount of pressure the media is putting on them also.

Didn't Seebolm break the world record in the semi then swim slower in the final? She SHOULD be disappointed. The mens 4x4 team - favorites and with the 2 fastest swimmers in the world this year didn't medal? Again, they should be disappointed and Magnussen should be embarrassed at delivering his poorest performance in 2 years on the biggest stage.

The potential rewards are high for these guys - and as such the failure to live up to expectations/capabilities should result in negative emotions. With swimming - like rowing and cycling - there really is not a lot of competition even at Olympic level...it is only wealthy countries (and generally swimmers come only from the coastal areas of wealthy countries) who compete and they are sports where Australia are traditionally strong...

Have a look at this article which talks about the difficulty in winning medals in different sports:
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/22/sp...edal.html?_r=4 As it shows, Swimming is 3rd in terms of average GDP per medal winner...bascially, most countries in the world are excluded from even competing in this sport.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

One thing that is really starting to s@#t me is the media's continuous references to the Sydney games.
Eg. Last night it was about the crowds and buskers , the commentater then went on to say"this never happened in Sydney and the street entertainment was no comparison.
We get it Sydney had great games, but other countries have hosted great Olympics as well.

So you're going to love having golf in the Olympics starting in 2016?

Most of the sports in the Olympics are rubbish... Point being that due to Foxtel's brilliant coverage () I have 8 channels at my disposal and still can't find something to watch... Bring on the athletics.

Of Course that's your opinion. The Olympics gives the opportunity for some sports that are not commercialised or given any media coverage to be given the limelight.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you are referring to the 2 James'?
If so I read today that they had the two slowest splits out of the four relay members in that final.
