Re: London 2012 Olympic Games Thread

I've enjoyed the coverage of the Olympic games and have been particularly impressed with the performance of Peter Donegan with the Athletics.

How does he rate with others?

Excellent compared to the ex sport stars some trying to commentate sport they have no idea about.
      Better than ray warren too.

I'm sure there are other people on here who understand the Athletics a lot better than myself but I think he has been terrific.
Just on the ex sports stars as commentators out of their area of expertise, has anyone actually impressed you?
I've found a couple of them have adapted very well but would be interested in what others think.

Well it still surprises me the level of suck that channel 9 produced. So many sports going on, and we get to see the same swimming heats over and over again.

I agree that Donegan was good.

Peter Donegan is a great football caller and he's magnificent when it comes to Athletics broadcasting. Throughly enjoy his calling of the Stawell Gift carnival, not just in the main race bout through the other races in the carnival also, particularly the distance races where he always provides a call that's informative about the participants but describes what is happening very well.

Rabs is a great commentator for the RL but I'm not sure about him when it comes to swimming.

Having said that if you've been watching the swimming events via Foxtel you would have been putting up with Ray Hadley, who is a poor man's Ray Warren on so many levels.

I don't think any Aussie broadcasters top Dennis Cometti for swimming. His calls of Perkins' gold in Atlanta and of the men's 4X100 freestyle in Sydney are two of my favourite Olympics moments of all time.

Perkins, now there was a swimmer. Broke the 800m and 1500m world records in the same race at the 1994 Comm. Games. That's one I won't forget for a while.

10 Million dollars a medal. Ka-ching. Import new coaches from China. Why not? We import everything else from there?

NZ performed very well with 5 gold medals. All water based sports.

Exactly, The British Cycling, Rowing coaches for starters are Aussies. Lots of Australians in China as well. On the other hand we have imported Gymnastics coaches.

They did very well. Was great to see the NZ girl take out the Kayak K1 200m sprint. Have seen her race a few times, especially with her partner in the doubles and they were too good for our girls (in Oceania Championships).

I have always rated Peter, he is a great caller of any sports he does, including the Footy.

I see Marty Dent is in the Marathon. A few years back in 2006 he beat out a mate of mine for a spot in the Commonwealth Games in the steeplechase.

In all, the medal tally didn't look as dire as we might have thought it would. 10th place and 30 or so medals is a nothing to moan about, our swimmers perform at the level we expect and we are right in amongst the top countries again.

Was a little hit and miss but still very entertaining, which wasn't surprising considering the brilliance of British music. Elbow performing 'Open Arms' and 'One Day Like This' was a big highlight, but Eddie and Giaan talking total shit throughout both songs detracted from it a little. George Michael went on a little too long.
