I tend to agree with this going by people I know, reading social media and listening to the radio, and being like your favourite football side, when the team is down the bottom and struggling the masses stay away, only the real die hards hang on and alot of that has to do with the Australian cricket side being so dominant for so long, we as a societ simply expect to be winning imo.

I also agree though that the twenty/20 format is damaging the game in alot of aspects including what us again as a society expect from the game, watching for 3 hours could possibly be alot more acceptable to the part time supporter than a test and generations will become more demanding for the entertainment aspect of that which has to hurt test cricket in the long run which in effect will perhaps change ways kids develop in the future.

That said, I'm a cricket tragic and still enjoy watching today whether it be the Aussies playing in India or the South Africans taking on the Kiwis.

Personally I got used to watching really good players always finding ways to stay in the contest. Even if we didn't win we'd generally be close and watching guys like Warne and Ponting made it worth investing the time. Watching the current team can cause more frustration that it's worth

        This is it for me.
For years we have had the likes of Border, Waugh, Warne, Punter, Gilly, McGrath and each year we welcomed Khan, Lara, Botham, Tandulka, Ambrose, you name 'em. Those of us that remember the 80s 90s 00s are lucky to see the absolute golden years of cricket and I feel we are going through a hangover period from that era.
Give it time and hopefully some new exciting names and cricket will come back on.
For those basketball fans, I'd liken it to the post Magic, Bird, Jordan days of the NBA.

True, but I don't remember the NBA reducing quarters to 2 minutes and lowering the ring for more slams.

Agreed. We have fundamentally altered the fabric of the game by the vast dollars created by T20 starting with the IPL. In order to compete the ACB has shoe horned 20/20 into our domestic schedule creating a disjointed season. At times it seems as if Shield cricket is an inconvenience to the games administrators.
I recall that even during the dark days of 84 and through the Rebel tours and culminating in back to back Ashes defeats in 85 and 86 we still were developing potential test cricketers in every state team. So much so that there were dozens of guys who were unlucky to either not earn a test cap or who only got limited opportunities. Guys like Glenn Bishop, Chris Matthews, Robbie Kerr, Jamie Siddons, Dirk Tazelaar, Paul Nobes, Andrew Zesers, Wayne Holdsworth, Mike Veletta, Jamie Brayshaw etc.
I just don't see the numbers of young guys - especially batsmen- who are coming through and scoring consistently in Shield summer after summer.
Is the problem related to the types of pitches we are preparing these days? Or is it the focus on 20/20 that affects players patience to place value on their wicket? I don't know but I definitely don't see this as being just a phase but symptomatic of a larger structural problem.

                Just my two bobs
Sutherland and his cohorts put the commercial interests ahead of what's best for the game at a longer form.
Sadly we'll only be playing India and England in future test matches.
Meaningless one day tournaments t/20 gimmicky rubbish, the've even compromised the local 50 over game!!
They 'll eventually cull the 50 over game other than teams playing India( TV ratings and money )
The Aussies need a middle order bat, yet we're playing in a meaningless one day tournament !
                My interest has waned significantly

Now I'm really annoyed with CA over the NSW one day comp!!

Go with me. Footy season goes into Bathurst, goes into Spring Carnival, goes into test matches, goes into Tennis, goes into ODIs... Now 2 weeks of nothing!!... goes into NAB Cup, goes into footy season (and repeat).

I am jonsing for some decent sport. This was where the one day domestic comp got my full attention and got me through to NAB Cup. I loved watching your Chee-quis, Diventus, Mahers, Hills, Holdworths and the kids standing up to season ending pressure to make names for themselves. But as a Victorian it usually meant we choked... 2 weekends without something worth watching is torcher!

I can't do domestic football, I just don't have the patience required to enjoy it properly. Lowy's men have obviously scheduled for the right schedule opening, obviously Cricket Australia didn't want the 2 weeks exposure.

Brings back memories. Kerry O'Keeffe recently made mention that Richard Chee Quee was Katut of Rhonda fame.

Richard wasn't too bad a state player in that NSW era. I loved Wayne Holdsworth, I always hoped he'd get further in his career. That and the cash for hitting the mercantile mutual signs and cash for crowd catches.

Holdsworth could just bowl fast and if the pitches were flat he wasn't too hard to handle.

Siddons was about the best state cricketer I have seen. I was at the Junction oval one day when I think he made 200 in a day against NSW. The ball kept getting hit to me and Geoff Lawson who was fielding at square leg made mention that I might as well have been their 12th man.

I think Shield cricket needs to be played at the Junction Oval not the MCG

Siddons would be about first picked in the national side if he played now. Re Holdsworth, that's why he never made it, but on something that moved like Tassie used to, he looked like a champion. On that, the Tassie team with Divenuto, Hills, Marsh, Cox and co were good to watch in shield in particular. I also agree with the junction oval call. The MCG seems a little odd, I never felt any sense of environment which impacted on my enjoyment, so I don't go. I think the last time was 15 or so years ago where I got Deano's autograph. It was a tour match with Pakistan where big Inzy got Williams fired up by asking him to spin the ball at the speed he was bowling (or some such). Then got to chase some balls around in practice with a few Pakistani players. To throw in another aside, there seems to be less and less tour matches.
