Behind Victorian Sheffield Shield coach Chris Rogers’ connection Collingwood assistant coach Matthew Boyd

It’s the Collingwood connection which could play a small part in toppling the Poms this summer, with Victorian coach Chris Rogers drawing on knowledge from the Pies’ inner sanctum.

Former Western Bulldogs star and now Collingwood assistant coach Matthew Boyd is immersing himself with the Victorian Sheffield Shield team this week on the back of his relationship with Vics coach and ex-Test opener Chris Rogers.

Boyd was in the Junction Oval nets with the Victorian side on Monday ahead of their match against Tasmania this week, with the three-time All-Australian and 2016 premiership player to sit with the Victorian team on day one of the clash with the Tigers.

The pair became friendly on a study tour of the US in 2018 and have remained in semi-regular contact. Rogers spent time with the Magpies last year, with the Victorian coach – whose side has won its first two Shield matches of the season – happy to reciprocate.

“I’ve got a bit of time off at the moment, and it’s always good to learn from different environments and from different coaches and just pick up one or two little things you might be able to take back to my own sport,” Boyd told this masthead.

“It’s good to get a little bit of insight into the lead-in, the prep work that goes into a game. And obviously today the bowling meeting, sat in on that. I don’t really understand the plans, but I heard a couple of the plans, and I heard a couple of things that they’re going to be trying to do with ball in hand

“It’s always good to get a bit of context around how teams prepare and lead into their competition.”

Rogers said his experience behind the scenes with the Pies had been rewarding.

“That was excellent, watching (Pies coach Craig) McRae present to the group and the team meetings, and then having some time with McRae and (Justin) Leppitsch at the end was excellent. So yeah it’s always been a bit of learning, as Boydy said you can bring back and hopefully this means I can go back there in the future.”

While Scott Boland trained on Monday, the Test paceman is being rested for this match but is set to play against NSW in round four in the lead-up to the first Ashes Test.

Spinner Todd Murphy, fresh from a key hand in the round two win over the Blues, was a member of the Australian XI in the most recent Ashes Test in 2023 following the injury to Nathan Lyon at Lord’s.

Murphy said Australia would be well prepared for the tourists’ Bazball onslaught.

“Obviously I grew up watching Ashes cricket, but probably didn’t realise the level of what it’s about,” Murphy said on Monday.

“I experienced it over in England, it was amazing to be a part of. And I think probably back then, a few years ago, it was still slightly different the way they were playing.

“But I think over the last couple of years, they’ve really committed to that, and that’s quite strong in how they do it.

“So I think sort of the Aussie guys know what to expect now, and yeah, they’ll back themselves in that. They’ll be able to contain them and hopefully have a good series win.”

Met Boyd playing at Box Hill golf club with Akermanis and Eade, looking for his ball.
He apologised for our lack of ultimate success at the time.
A very responsible and capable person, perhaps our future coach.
We didn't find his ball, a push off the tee.Footscray Football Republic.😀 1Comment
