Silence surrounding Carlton president Luke Sayers’ ‘dick pic’ scandal exposes AFL boys club double standard

The crickets from AFL House surrounding Luke Sayers “dick pic” scandal is a double standard when you compare it to the heavy handed way players are treated, writes Michael Warner.

Imagine for a moment a “dick pic” had been sent from Toby Greene’s social media account to a high-ranking female executive at one of Greater Western Sydney’s major sponsors.

Investigators at the AFL integrity unit would be all over Greene (and the Giants) getting to the bottom of the sordid posting.

Greene, of course, has done nothing of the sort. Yet in the curious case of Carlton president Luke Sayers, from whose X account emanated exactly the same scenario last week, we’re getting crickets from head office.

The AFL and Carlton - a club that preaches gender equality via its Carlton Respects program (in which Blues players wear orange socks to raise awareness) - are still refusing to even discuss it.

Sayers, too, has declined to answer questions about whether the appendage in the photo posted on his account on January 9 belongs to him.

The image went viral before the ex-PwC boss frantically deleted it 12 minutes later.

“Sorry my account has been hacked – please ignore all posts”, he wrote.

Speaking from Italy, Sayers told the Herald Sun last week that he was “outraged” and would do anything to find the perpetrators.

“This is outrageous – I’m investigating and will leave no stone unturned finding out who did this to me and my family,” Sayers said.

But has he lodged a complaint with Victoria Police yet?

Is he, as he has stated, the victim of a hack and innocent in all of this?

Tech experts say it would be relatively easy to find out from which device the X post was made if indeed Sayers had been hacked.

Given his public standing, surely the onus is on the Sayers Group boss to produce the evidence to show that he did not send the message and therefore did not sexually harass the woman involved?

And what of Bupa, the leading health insurance company that has pumped millions of dollars into the Blues where the female executive is employed?

How do they feel about a senior employee being named alongside a picture of a penis seen by half of Australia?

What past dealings or correspondence, if any, has Sayers had with her?

Have the AFL or Blues officials reached out to her for answers?

So far we have no idea.

But what we do know is that Sayers, recently touted as a future chairman of the AFL Commission, is a card-carrying member of football’s boys’ club establishment and the head of a major consultancy firm whose backers include some of Melbourne’s heaviest hitters.

And when it comes to investigating their own, the Masters of the AFL Universe are always loath to act.

Wow , well it certainly looks like the old , do as i say , not as i do . Interesting that's there's no word from the AFL or Carlton , pretty easy to see why he hasn't lodged a complaint with vic police , because if they investigate , the truth will come out , and maybe the truth in this case, needs to stay buried .

You've gotta have a fair amount of fondness for yourself it you're sending unsolicited pictures of your wang around the place, let alone to sponsors.
          TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

It never ceases to amaze me that those who love to virtue signal the loudest are often those whose actions never match what they say. 100% he should have been sacked after the PwC scandal and it is crazy that all we have had from AFL house is radio silence on this.

"Former PwC Australia boss and Carlton chair Luke Sayers is being investigated by the Australian Football League’s integrity unit after a “hack” of his social media which saw a picture of a penis posted online.

Sources indicated the consulting figure, who now runs his own firm Sayers Group, was referred to the AFL’s integrity unit last week with a probe now underway into the incident."

AFL integrity unit investigates lewd image posted to Carlton president’s account link: https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/...17-p5l54g.html

The AFL Integrity Unit is investigating how a lewd image appeared on Carlton president Luke Sayers’ social media account on January 8, leaving Sayers with four options when he returns from overseas at the end of the month.

None of those options involves hoping the issue will disappear as the offending post did soon after it appeared on Sayers’ now-deleted social media account.

People at Carlton, the AFL and club sponsor Bupa – which employs the woman whose social media handle was included in the post – know that.

The controversy has caused distress to people unwittingly connected to it, and Bupa’s primary concern has been the wellbeing of their employee.

The Carlton sponsorship remains in place and there is no suggestion that it is in jeopardy, but the Blues and the company have been having ongoing discussions since the offending image was posted about what the response should be.

No one at the AFL, Carlton or Bupa has been willing to comment publicly, given the sensitivity of the issue, and attempts to contact Sayers were directed to his personal assistant. But according to industry figures familiar with the situation Sayers has the following options once he returns to Australia.

He can support the results of the AFL integrity investigation being made public. An industry source with knowledge of the situation, speaking anonymously because of the sensitivity of the matter, confirmed on Friday the inquiry has been underway since the Blues referred the matter to them soon after the post appeared.

Making the outcome public would help to protect other high-profile figures in business and sport who could be vulnerable to such an attack made with malicious intent. In the era of deep fakes, manipulation of images and cybercrime, such an investigation would serve a broad purpose. It would also be consistent with the president’s emotional declaration he would leave no stone unturned in finding the culprit after he said he had been hacked.

One possibility is that a crime has been committed against him.

If Sayers does not want the results of an investigation made public he could explain the situation to the club’s board. The board could then outline their response to members and sponsors, and why, in their view, the club president – who is departing at the end of 2025 – remains the best person to lead and represent the club during this season.

The third option would be for Sayers to stand aside immediately to minimise the distraction to the club and protect other people and organisations in his orbit.

Given the work he has done to get the club on track on field, that might be a huge disappointment to him, but it would also allow others to move forward without this issue hovering over the Blues in 2025.

Alternatively, the club and AFL could try to ride the drama out as a personal and legal matter for Sayers, irrelevant to his position as club president. Given he is leaving at the end of the season a handover plan could be put in place, in the hope the caravan moves on.

That’s possible but a tough road to walk with the club needing to minimise distractions in their quest for their first flag in 30 years.

Whenever I see the words "AFL Integrity unit" I have a chuckle.

                          Imagine if every organisation self-policed.

He's apparently released a statement via a spokesperson:

“Mr Sayers did not post an image to his X account on 8 January 2025. When he was alerted that his social media had been hacked, he immediately disabled all of his accounts and engaged legal counsel. Mr Sayers acknowledges the distress of everyone impacted by this shocking incident,” the spokesperson said.

“Mr Sayers and the club have been engaging with the AFL integrity unit, and he will continue to deal with this issue without further public comment.”

I find it interesting that if it was a targeted smear by a hacker, how specific it was to Sayers and the victim/ Bupa staff member. On the balance of things, is that more likely to have happened than someone getting on the piss and fumbling their way through their private mobile phone photos and X account, and accidentally sharing a dick pick on his main profile page? Time will tell I guess.

As an aside, check out the mansion the dude just sold! Around the corner from me, have driven passed it and a bunch of others in the area which are out of control opulent.

Got his account back within 12 minutes of being 'hacked' to delete the tweet. My friend got his Instagram and Facebook hacked in early December and hasn't got access to them again yet.

Should have gone the Talia 'lost my phone' excuse, would have been more believable.

Sam Walsh has done a hamstring and Nic Newman out for the season with a torn patellar. Rough week for the Blues in and off even if Newman is fringe.
Newman might be done with that sort of injury at 32.
