    Re: 2023 AFL Finals Series

I don’t wanna hijack the thread but (as a KISS fan) I just wanted to say I appreciated the comments after their performance. I didn’t have the time to reply, other than like. When they got announced there were a lot of “haters”. They were proven wrong. All day I’ve been reading nothing but positive on all AFL social media. Not KISS fans, but footy fans. Great to see and was the perfect start to a close, entertaining grand final.
Anyway, I hope everyone enjoyed the day as much as I did.
    Thanks again.
I will never see #16 the same!!

I thought they were awesome and the overall performance was first class. I think if it was at night time, it would have been about 10 times better. There is something that just doesn't work with Rock and Roll and daylight.

He is a professional. He gives everything. You can't question his committment, his attack on the footy and ability to get the best out of himself. However, he just isn't blessed with enough talent to rip a game apart or serioulsy damage the opposition. He isn't a great kick, he doesn't have genuine pace, he doesn't have time or space in traffic and his disposal under pressure is questionable.

That they chose to use him as a tagger in the biggest two games of the year is telling. That De Goey kicked the goal that put them in front in the GF in the dying minutes will seriously haunt him for years.
I get the lols for Dunkley - he is no longer a Bulldog so fark him. But he was really good as a defensive-oriented mid on De Goey yesterday - you can't stop De Goey for 120 minutes and he got off the chain a couple of times as champion finals performers do (and De Goey is as good a finals performer as there has been).

Neale was far more culpable in the loss yesterday - Mitchell did a magnificent job shutting Neale out of impacting the game, and actually torched him going the other way with some composed I50 delivery (13 tackles as well was really important).

Brisbane looked like absolute winners when McCarthy put them 13 point up approaching half time, but they lost their composure and allowed the momentum to shift in the last 5 minutes of the 1st half. Then it became a dog fight in the 2nd half which suited Collingwood - I reckon Brisbane lost their dare and moved the ball way too slowly and conservatively in the 2nd half.

Agree with the senitment. Neale also didn't stand up.

But Dunkley's job was there to stop De Goey in the crucial moments. With five minutes left in the game and the Lions in front, De Goey gets off the leash from the centre bounce and kicks the goal to basically win the game and Dunks is no where to be seen. He was at least 10m to 15m from Jordan.

He was the difference in that last quarter. When everyone was losing their minds, he kept his head, he was calm, he found time, his used the ball well and increidbly helped himself to 11 possesions, 9 kicks, 2 handballs, 3 marks, 3 tackles and 4 contested possesions in the last quarter. He atteneded every centre bounce in the last quarter. He wasn't just playing a role as a 35 year old veteran, he was carrying the team on his back. Incredible. Kudos and respect.
Great call. Incredible player. I wonder where he ends his career in the GOAT debate?

Can someone please explain to me why some people think that Hipwood is a good forward?

Yesterday the Pies lost their second best tall defender who I really rate in the first quarter and Hipwood had a chance to really shine.

              He didn't.

In fact, he didn't really have any impact on the game at all.

I have never seen him play a really good game.

I really don't understand why some rate him.

I have never rated him, the fact that he got a 7 year contract baffled me. I don't rate Daniher either but he occasionally does have elite games although he's not a consistent player.

I must say I got Bobby Hill wrong, I remember him playing in a final against Brisbane in the early days I just thought he would never have the physicality to play at the highest level.

Collingwood deserved winners and really happy for Pendles, I'm not sure there has been too many better in the fact he has been so consistent and such a likeable player across his career. He is a player very similar to Bont in that sense, quality human beings and its reflected in how they play the game quality > quantity.

He has to be close to the Pies GOAT. Six AA. Five Copelands. Two Premierships. Five Grand Finals. A Norm Smith. Nine seasons as captain. Will most likely play his 400th game next year.

(I also think that he and Sidebottom are the only living Collingwood players with more than one Premiership).

I think that the only ones that could possibly compare would be their stars of the run in the 20s and 30s. So the Coventry brothers and the Collier brothers.

I just saw Dunkley’s stats for the season, have their coaches got him wrong or at least been blinkered?

Slightly down for a lot of key stats, but shockingly only 2 goals in 24 games. This is a guy who is a good overhead mark and can hit the scoreboard. Or at least, used to hit the scoreboard and make oppo coaches worry about him offensively. I’m kind of taken a bit a back, I know he and them wanted him more midfield. But a guy with goal scoring ability kicking only one goal on average every 12 games is a radical change. Surely he’s worth a burst forward here or there. Not just yesterday. Kind of feels like they’ve got blinkers on.

Yeah Bevo used him as well as you can.

He's not a playmaker like Bont, but should go forward and kick a few.

Amazing talent and so professional to still be performing at his best at 35 years of age after 383 games. He has some issues with his back a few years ago, but he took his training and preparation to another level.

                                Ha. Yes. That line.

However, I have played a lot of basketball and I still coach my children's teams. His space awareness in traffic is not basketball like. It is actually completely different. In basketball you don't need to ever panic with the ball in hand as you can't get tackled. You just need to protect the ball when there are opponents near you. Pendles skill is finding the space and time in heavy traffic to aovid tackles and have time to get a clear possession off. Yes, the pheriphal vision you need in basketball has some synergy, but the ability to side step, to move to where there is space, to not panic with the ball in hand when at anytime from 360 degrees someone can smash you has very, very little to do with basketball.

He is skill is not because he played basketball, he is a gentic freak with his spatial awareness matched by a professional work ethic that has to be in the top few % of all time to play the game.
