Plowman is more of a natural attacking defender so we would need to look elsewhere for that shutdown type.

I think he must be assuming that Yarran nets the Blues Richmonds first draft pick which I think is unlikely. GWS will want a first round pick and if we were prepared to offer pick 11 it could put us in a good position. It's an iffy if though.
A former number 3 pick but he has only played 20 games in 3 seasons and at 192cm he is just a bit undersized for what we are really after. I still think he could turn into a good attacking defender in our current defensive set-up.

On our long term defensive options...

Just heard Jeremy McGovern say they don't worry about size and see themselves as a back 6. Think we are very similar with our team defence.

On our tall-medium long term options
Roberts- playing on big bodied/monster type forward
Roughead - back up to play on bigger forwards if not in ruck
        Hamling- 2nd tall
Z Cordy- 2nd/3rd tall (more attacking/less lock down version of Morris is a good call)
Wood - 3rd tall if needed
Webb- think he can also play on 3rd tall in a team defence, expose them the other way etc

It has worked for West Coast but I'm yet to be convinced you can win premierships without one, if not two genuinely big, high quality lock down defenders. Last night was a decent example, Ben Brown was in prime position to take contested marks over Sheppard and Wellingham a number of times and if he didn't have such a stinker could have kicked four and five and won North that game. They'd still be a better side with Eric Mackenzie in there.

Bevo and Simpson may both be out of the Clarkson school with that dynamic, zone defence but I think it still works best with a number of bodies able to do lock down jobs, it's why the Hawks have gone after Gibson, Lake and Frawley.

I like the Henderson option, he's mobile enough to fit into the structure comfortably and his foot-skills are very good for a guy that size. If we can get into his ear about broadening his horizons past Geelong I think we can come over the top of Walker (poor mans Casboult?) as a trade option.

You can bet if Simpson had the tall and big bodied cattle available to play in the back six he'd be playing them. Fantastic effort to get to the big dance with the structure he has, like you I'll be watching very closely to see if it can be successful next Saturday.

Good point. Simpson's main key defenders, MacKenzie and Brown, have been out injured for most of the year. He's been making do with an undermanned, patched up defence all the way through.

At times he has had his 3rd, 4th & 5th best tall defenders also out, and had to go with the likes of Elliott Yeo as his main key defender, who last night was basically playing as a small forward.

              Brilliant coaching performance.

Yep. Even with their team defence, the Eagles have one of the best KP defenders in the game in McGovern. Add McKenzie to that side next year and their backline looks pretty handy!

Gee jed Anderson would look good on our list.
We were heavily touted to draft him, and he looks very silky

                    Out of contract I think.

For mine I don't think we should be chasing Plowman.

Our stocks for attacking defenders looks OK.

I think with Wood, JJ, Hamling, Webb, Biggs and Cordy we have a nice balance of attack and defence, my concern is the Full Back and Centre Half Back spots.

From memory did GWS reach for Plowman - drafting for a need, rather than the best talent available?

I agree on Plowman, and wondering Carlton might think they're out of the running for Carlisle.
We've got similar size types, and we need the monster key backand hence the interest in Carlisle.
The durability of Roughy is an issue for me

Yep, Plowman would cost our first pick which I'd rather use it(if we are looking at trading it) on an area of need(Ruck ot KPD). Attacking defenders we aren't short of atm.

More pressing areas for me as well, if we need to use a first rounder then it needs to be to fill an essential gap in our list.
If by some miracle we could score he for less, then i wouldn't be disappointed.

Agreed, if Plowman was any good he would have played 50 games for GWS by now - they have been screaming for key defenders their entire history. This bloke (and Jaksch last year) are simply ordinary footballers.
