Boyd sidelined by shoulder, but Dogs won't slow

An injured shoulder is set to keep Tom Boyd on the sidelines for at least two weeks, Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge told media on Friday.

After losing playmakers Robert Murphy and Jason Johannisen to injuries in consecutive weeks, Beveridge said Boyd had been managing the shoulder since February.

The 20-year-old's shoulder flared up in a ruck contest during the last quarter of the win over Carlton last weekend.

"He had a similar episode on our community camp when we trained in Ballarat and he missed a few weeks and it's exactly the same thing," Beveridge said.

"But he came back from that and he was really strong, so we anticipate in a few weeks time he'll be ready to resurface at AFL level.

"He's had a strong few weeks but probably wasn't at the peak of his powers last week.

"We expect him to come back in to the team pretty quickly."

With Boyd on the sidelines, Tom Campbell gets his chance after an ankle injury in the final week of the NAB Challenge disrupted his round one preparations.

When talk turned injuries to Murphy and Johannisen, Beveridge insisted their absence wouldn't change his side's attacking style.

The rebounding defenders have generated plenty of drive off half-back under second-year coach's tenure.

"We're planning to play exactly the same way and the boys who will play in those roles have played them before," Beveridge said.

"We feel like we can cover it (and) we've had a good start to the year with our balance between offence and defence, and the plan will be to maintain that.

While an injured hamstring will keep Johannisen out for at least 10 weeks, Beveridge said Murphy's knee reconstruction procedure had been a success and the veteran was in good spirits.

Beveridge believed the inclusion of goalsneak Tory Dickson, who hasn't played since week one of the NAB Challenge due to adductor and quad injuries, would be a valuable one on Saturday night.

"Tory has been a multiple goal kicker at times and maybe (he) offsets any pressure there to kick goals (amongst the forward) group.

"We've always tried to spread our goal-kicking load through as many players as we can and I think we had another 10 last week."

Thanks for all the positive vibes! Super happy to know I have a rock solid ACL graft !!

I think he is sore in the knee and ankle, so may need a rest. No major injury to his knee.

Suckling out for at least a month.

Caleb out for a week, but should be ok for week after.

Hamling comes in and Caleb didn't play anyway.
No huge changes , Hamling can play good footy.

Not surprised Suckling's injury is a month, I think he's been carrying that ankle for a while .
Nice to catch a break for a change on the injuries . When are the two Smith's back ?

JJ was @ three quarter pace which is remarkable. I couldn't believe it. He was on the bike as well. He looks 3-4 weeks away not nine!

Other observations;

Daniel was walking around unimpeded.
Suckling is walking around no problems but needs a minor clean up on the ankle as there are apparently bone frags.
Clay Smith is walking around unimpeded and did inside work. Every now and again he would run out onto the ground from inside and turn back inside again. He did this a few times. Looks bigger.
Koby Stevens spent time with Rohan Smith.
The boys were really revving TC up for the weekend, very vocal about Tom tearing Goldie a new one.
Libba did light duties if I can call them that.
Toby McLean looked sore and walked about 5 laps.

l have been told by someone l know at the club (Trainer) that JJ might be as little as 4 weeks.
Nowhere near as bad as first thought.
