Big thing for me was his positioning at throw ins. He usually always gets manhandled by Marshall, giving up front position and allowing Marshall to control things. He was very proactive in maintaining position in the ruck contests, stark contrast to other games where he is knocked around.

English's best game for the year. Good sign.

His approach to ruck contests all year has been quite proactive, particularly around obtaining and maintaining front position.

His around the ground work has annoyed me (dropping marks, running past for handball receives under pressure, overestimating his foot skills) but his ruckwork has been really solid. A significant improvement on previous seasons.

Must have been those two sessions with Crossley...

He has dropped a few marks but he is top two for marks taken by a ruckman

Watching the replay, 8 thought JOD took a step forward in his development as a defender last night. He got up to the contest quite a bit and was involved in some good chains of possession.

Picked his targets well, kicking was spot on and he never really bit off more than he could chew.

Dr Davidson too, in terms of his kicking game.

Only 5 contested marks, out of his 26 for the season, which is absolutely something for him to improve on.

Maybe Sam Darcy can teach him while he's recovering (tbh it is probably the fact that he's in the same team as Darcy, Naughton, Lobb that makes his dropped contested marks stand out).

It's a real knock on his game. He should be able to hold more marks each game

I felt that his start was sketchy. St Kilda's first goal came as a direct result of him and Lobb going for the mark/spoil when only one needed to. However you could see Lobb, Jones and JOD chatting together on the ground after the Saints lightning start, and from then on, we structured up right. He executed really well from then on.

Yep, I was at Norwood on both the Saturday and Sunday and it was hot both days.

I guess we had a slight advantage in an extra days break and our game starting a little later than the Saints game meaning it wasn't as hot towards the end.

There has been a bit of discussion on the impact of the heat from gather round.

We definitely ran out of gas at Norwood, probably impacted by the heat in Perth and short break on return from Perth.

Brisbane from our game had a 5 day break and had nothing to give against Collingwood, but apparently makes Collingwood new premiership favourite.

GWS were poor against Adelaide after the match against St K. as well as the poor showing by Saints against us.

There is definite evidence that the heat played a big part in the next game and particularly for the team with reduced recovery time.

Honestly, I think picking up Crossley with that last slot could have been a great move just for strong-bodied training partner Tim would get. I guess it would pinch ruck time off Smith at Footscray though, so there is that.

Which sucks considering we play in Darwin in a few weeks- which hands Essendon a bit of an advantage the week later.

GC only have a 5 day break from their first Darwin game to their second (against the Hawks), I would be filthy if I was them. On the other hand, the Hawks take a 9 day break after their Darwin game- wouldn't that luxury be nice.
