It's hard to disagree with the llama.

‘I’m calling bullsh**’: Riewoldt unloads on AFL over Rioli saga

Former St Kilda star Nick Riewoldt has unloaded on the AFL for glaring inconsistencies in penalties it has handed out to players and has questioned the league’s claim that it was unaware of earlier threats made by Port Adelaide forward Willie Rioli.

Riewoldt said the league was “lacking accountability”, adding that the Rioli situation was “another embarrassment” for football boss Laura Kane.

The AFL released a statement on Monday saying it would take “no further action” on Rioli, after the Herald Sun revealed that the Power goalkicker had sent a threatening message to a teammate of Western Bulldogs defender Bailey Dale.

Riewoldt said that decision was “staggering” in itself, even before claims emerged that Rioli had made on-field threats towards opponents during two other matches this season.

“They just went and cleared that and said, ‘It’s not our issue, it’s a club issue’ when the AFL go and stick their nose in every other issue that goes on,” Riewoldt said on Triple M on Wednesday.

“It has since emerged, which makes the AFL look even worse, that Willie Rioli is a recidivist in this area and that he has threatened…at least three players.

“It’s come to light because some journalists have done some digging. The AFL are denying they knew anything about it, which I’m calling bullsh** on because they stick their nose into everything and they know all this stuff.

“This is another embarrassment for Laura Kane, the GM of football, and the state of football from a pure football point of view.”

Riewoldt pointed to two other matters that the AFL had dealt with in relation to player behaviour since last September.

Six Greater Western Sydney players were suspended and a further seven were fined for “conduct unbecoming” after dressing up in inappropriate costumes during a private end-of-season function last September.

One player – Josh Fahey – was suspended for four matches, while five other players received two-game bans.

It was also noted that Richmond defender Noah Balta received a four-match suspension after being charged with assaulting a man outside a New South Wales pub last December.

Balta returned to play last month, three days before facing a delayed court appearance.

“Try and marry these up for me,” Riewoldt said.

“Four games for dress ups is the same suspension that Noah Balta copped for physically abusing someone in the street.

“You’ve got zero for threats, you’ve got four for dress ups and you’ve got four for physical violence in the street. Under Laura Kane, the AFL disciplinary system has become a ‘Spin the Wheel of Justice’ game show. That’s what it’s become. It is an absolute joke and it is undermining all of the great work that is happening.”

Riewoldt said the game was “flying” commercially off the field, but added the football department had multiple major issues to deal with.

“The coaches are absolutely livid with the football department of the AFL, with the way the soft cap has not bounced back to original numbers despite the rest of the game growing significantly, with the way the game is being adjudicated, with the MRO,” he said.

I soundly agree that police standards should should by met by the AFL and other semi autonomous bodies, like schools too, teachers having to accept abuse from students and parents.
Leigh Mattews assault on Bruns deserved jail time as did the MFC a'hole who assaulted Wallace in front of me on Hawkins Wing..
Willie is clearly guilty and warrants AFL, if not civil sanction.
I presume the AFL are being culturally sensitive in the matter, not lily livered.
The Riolis have serious issues we don't know and it's unwise to inflame them culturally.
Willie needs to learn not see enemies that don't exist.

'Remember it for next time': Dogs coach fires back at Koch over accusation

Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge has hit back at Power chairman David Koch

WESTERN Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge has accused Yartapuulti of making excuses for Willie Rioli's threatening behaviour and warned Power chairman David Koch of retribution over his sledging claim.

Koch has claimed Rioli was subjected to "cultural disrespect" from Bulldogs players during their round eight fixture, which led to the forward striking Bailey Dale off the ball.

After the game, Rioli sent a threatening message to Dale through one of his Bulldogs teammates.

Rioli was initially cleared by the AFL but was later suspended for one match after it emerged he had also threatened Essendon and Geelong players on the field.

Rioli did not claim he was subjected to racism, but Koch said the 29-year-old had been provoked.

"It was, if you like, cultural disrespect during the game, referring to where he had come from, community habits and things like that," Koch told FIVEaa radio on Thursday.

"As an industry, we have to be aware of that.

"And as I have said, it's no excuse for sending a private message after the game, but it helps us understand the build-up and frustrations.

"That's where the reactions come from."

On Friday, Beveridge launched a staunch defence of his players and club when asked by reporters to respond to Koch's comments.

"I can tell you as a matter of fact that the comments weren't culturally insensitive," Beveridge said.

"It surprises me that he (Koch) would insinuate or accuse our players of going down that track.

"Especially our football club and our people, high character, we'd never disrespect First Nations people in our language or our actions."

Beveridge accused Koch of "enabling" Rioli and set the tone for an explosive encounter next time the clubs meet.

"I said at the time Willie's made a mistake, we'll forgive and we'll move on and he'll learn from it," Beveridge said.

"Will he learn from it if his own club's enabling him by making excuses for him? Because it didn't happen.

"There's always a little bit of edginess in the way players talk to each other, but our players would never say anything to an Indigenous player that's culturally insensitive.

"But we won't ask for an apology, we'll just obviously remember it for next time."

Beveridge said he had not spoken to anyone from Yartapuulti about Koch's accusations and did not expect any further action from the AFL.

He also backed All-Australian defender Dale.

"Bailey Dale, who wouldn't agitate a milkshake, he's an outstanding player but he's not an adversarial, front-foot type of player. He plays football," Beveridge said.

"He wanted to move on extremely quickly because he was surprised by what had happened.

"We thought it was behind us. I'm sure the AFL feel the same, so I'm not sure why that angle has come up after the fact now.

"Maybe it's because Willie's back playing this week, I don't know."

Rioli sat out the Power's defeat to Kuwarna last week and will return in their clash with Geelong on Saturday.

Earlier this week, Power coach Ken Hinkley said he hoped the fresh spotlight on racism in the AFL could be a watershed moment for the code.

Hinkley said the Rioli case had found a positive by triggering wider, sometimes uncomfortable, conversations about AFL Indigenous issues.

Here is the President of an AFL club peddling innuendo of the most serious nature without providing a single fact or piece of evidence.

Koch made a career of indulging in banal populism when plying his trade on the wasteland of morning television. He now seems to be charting a similar course in his stewardship of the Port Adelaide Football Club.

As President, he should not indulge in this manner of populism, but should man up and state exactly what he is asserting was said, specifically who he asserts said it, and exactly when. Make the assertion and own the outcome!

But if his choice is to continue to be the carnival busker, with a career that ebbs and flows around the volume of clickbait he generates, then he should concentrate on producing programs for television channels that no-one watches.

Glad Bevo came out to defend Dale and the playing group.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

Great response from Bevo. Loved the 'wouldn't agitate a milkshake' description of Bailey Dale.

The defence of Dale/the players was good.

This part probably unnecessary, but classic Bevo...
