Always Right Match Committee R19 vs Brisbane Lions 2025

Welcome to the Always Right Match Committee Thread. The Match Committee threads has been named after long time WOOF member Always Right who tragically passed away in March 2018.

If you were on the Western Bulldogs match committee, what changes would you make after our Round 18 match against Adelaide for our Round 19 match against Brisbane Lions at the GABBA on Friday.

For those new to these threads, please give a brief explanation for your changes ... this would add a lot of value to the discussion.

Meh. Not like any changes will make great difference. Coffield, one or both of Dolan or Hynes the outs

The Crows loss wasn't on particular players and their selection. However, I do think that we have some guys waiting in the wings that would be an immediate upgrade no matter what so:

          IN: Harmes, Khamis,
          OUT: Hynes, Poulter

If I really wanted to shake things up, I'd bring Sellwood in but I have no idea if the MC are even considering him at this point.

Can we just forfeit and let the guys rest?

What was the loss on then? I’m genuinely curious to know.

How is a backline with Lobb, Jones, Buss and JOD going to function?

** JOD has been bog average. From skill errors to getting toweled up, I'm not sure how he escapes criticism.

** I like Hynes and would perhaps keep him over Dolan. Coin flip.

** We should have been playing Busslinger. There's no reason not to. Our back half has sucked all year, we need to develop him/provide him with an AFL challenge, and most of all Lobb needs support. Buss ain't learning anymore at VFL level at this stage.

                    ** Last hurrah for Jones

The theory behind having only 2 genuine defensive talls is built on having 1 extra mid to provide running power. Are we actually losing any running power if Coff is replaced with a tall (Jones, Buss or Buku, take your pick). Also, aren't we robbing ourselves with Williams having to be deployed deeper in defence to play tall and miss his running power and ball use further up the ground?

That's not to say anything of JOD being unable to defend the high ball, and Lobb not exactly playing to his strengths being forced to do so either.

We need another tall down back, the mix at the moment isn't right IMO. I'm not going to hang the MC for structuring up with one less tall defender today, but they now need to adjust.

Buss was brought in against gWS to combat their fwd talls with JoD and Lobb, it worked well. Yet against adel with similar, we play only 2.
Williams is a lot better for our structure in the wing. He shouldn’t have to play down back.

I just don’t get what the MC were trying to achieve. Didn’t they see how easily Larkey bent over Lobb and JoD ?

mind boggling decision by the MC.

Hynes wouldn’t get a game with WC from what I’ve seen.
I will never see #16 the same!!

                          .
I usually sit at ground level but today I was up near the roof. Talk about running… they were and we weren’t.

Adelaide had clearly defined running paths where receivers set up with space for midrange kicks close to the corridor. We didn’t seem to have preconceived expectations so players with the ball looked for forward (often turnover)handballs or long bombs. Very few of our players have penetrating foot skills. They seem to have to think when well drilled reflex plays are called for. A lot of work needed here.

For mine I actually think we don’t do a whole lot wrong against the Crows. Bevo will take a lot away from that game. If Darcy held 50% of those marks he got to the game was over.

if we stuck 50% of the missed tackles game over.

The fact that we didn’t we lost.

IMO we should drop Hynes, Poulter and Dolan to

                            in Harmes, Khamis and Jones

I think that Buku helps Darcy by clearing space. He also is a nice kick at goal. He is also flexible.

I recon we need Liam Jones as he can defend and his experience and leadership is huge. It frees up JOD and Lobb. Also forces Williams up the ground. Harmes is proven and dangerous around the F50 and can run all day.

I would also have Doc as the sub as he just looks like he needs a rest after a guy running 1st year of footy. But he is to good to drop
                            BB.

Looking forward - Naughton, Darcy and JUH. It will be the envy of everyone.

I agree, we are getting to the pointy end and need some experience to get through, however, I would keep Davidson in, he just got back from being ill and will be better for the run.

Dolan cost us at least two goals in the first quarter with his poor disposal and turnovers and Hynes needs more time in the VFL. Poulter I am giving up on.
