yep I get what you’re saying about McNeil.but my counter, is that at least McNeil is getting shots on goal. He runs hard, and tends to find space in the fwd line. He offers way more than Dolan and Hynes in this role. If he’s not in this role, it should be Scott. Hynes just seems lost and running in circles.

 From Scott2016:-
I agree with this apart from Mcniel. Had his chances, someone elses turn. His tackle numbers arent as good as you made out. Have a look at the Gold Coast game. Noble slipped away from him too easy. Mcniels goals he has missed have really deflated the side. 3 in Geelong and Sydney come to mind

McNeil missing 30m out directly in front at Marvel and other grounds at critical times is the stuff of nightmares... McNeil has had his chances and failed imo.Comment

Didn't Scott get towelled up by Cameron vs Brisbane before?I think everyone has forgotten Scott is still on our list. Poor bloke hasn't been seen in the senior team since copping that horrible concussion in the first minute against Sydney at Marvel in June last year.

We are deficient down back with small lockdown defenders and also up forward with consistent week-to-week bankable high half forwards. Scott is versatile enough to fill either hole, and like you said it's not as though others haven't been given countless opportunities to make those positions their own. Plus he's in excellent form at VFL level being best-on last start. Assuming Scott's contract is up at the end of this year, he more than anyone else deserves a run of a few games to re-establish his AFEL credentials. He's a smart team player who generally makes good decisions.Comment

I would be surprised if Coffield is out. He is doing basically what we are asking of him. I personally don't really have any faith in him improving us but he is playing his role, and we rarely drop blokes that do that.

I like the idea of 3 key defenders, but Brisbane have Hipwood, Morris and Fort as their talls. I'm pretty open to changing the setup but if we didn't do it for Adelaide it'd have to be a distinctive change in philosophy to do it this week. As I said earlier i think he are very happy to ride out any form issues JOD has for the greater good.

Poulter doesn't make us better, but we knew that and still picked him. We don't seem interested in playing him as a wing and Khamis is definitively better at that medium forward thing. Harmes is best 22 and Hynes is not there yet. They'd be my two proper changes.

Dolan is the other, like everyone I have a lot of faith he will be something, but he is still yet to have an actual moment (thought that goal was going to be it...alas). I could see us picking Jaques instead and making him sub, which would be fine, but doesn't change the needle at all. I'd probably go with Scott as sub instead, can do everything, and is someone i think we can trust to "get" the sub role somewhat.I should leave it alone but you're not right👍 2Comment

Just thinking about it. If Jones isn’t quite right then Buss vines in. The concerns around JOD and his forn or playing the three talls. Why wouldn’t we give JOD a second ole up on the wing. Could he be that Bitzard/jones type of wingman.

I like Khamas in the side as he will continue to sacrifice his game are make space for Darcy

as m noted above if Scott has those numbers. He must be rewardedBB.

Looking forward - Naughton, Darcy and JUH. It will be the envy of everyone.Comment

Our small forwards have not been getting the ball enough.

 three reasons…

…long bombs to key forwards. Backmen know it always happens and behave accordingly. Crowds out our small forwards.
….poor foot skills through the wings, and the over use of handball helping opposition interceptions.
….nobody leading into open spaces, because there are none. Slow wide movement allows opposition to flood back.

The last two lead to under pressure handballs and the easy turnovers you referred to.

Other teams seem to set up for our turnovers by always having a man outside the play zone and another remaining deep forward. This combination means their goals seem quicker and easier.

So yes, I agree with you. On our forward line it is difficult to get position and we need better tactics and stronger bodies than we are using at the moment.Comment

I am not too concerned. I just get frustrated by people saying things that a wrong or clearly misleading. It's not matter of different opinion when someone says a player doesn't intercept the ball when he ranked highly for intercepts in the game just gone. It'd be like me saying Naughton doesn't kick goals when he just kicked 5 goals on the weekend. It's just wrong.

You can not like Coffield or think he has flaws, because he does, but be smart about it and actually articulate what about his game you think is a problem. Not just "he doesn't intercept" when that is just flat out incorrect.Comment

 See my above response, Mantis.
Must be hard being the smartest person in the room, hey.

I'm more than happy to be challenged, which you've done... but there is a ways & means.

Coffield is a smart player, he positions himself well, but his inability to take contested intercepts marks is the area I'm concerned about... he doesn't have the athleticism or strength over head to win the ball back... and that's what we need from our tall 3rd.👍 1Comment

And to your credit, your follow up response is exactly the kind of criticism that I think is good for healthy football discussions. I actually agree with you. I do think he has shown multiple acts of courage to try and take those contested intercept marks so it's not a question of want and desire, he just doesn't have the sticky hands to land them right now.Comment

Cmon 2 uncontested intercept marks a week is not nearly enough to justify your spot in the team as a medium defender.

 - Can’t hold onto contested marks, agree he has nearly held a few. Cool. It’s not Auskick man, getting your hands to the ball isn’t something we should be proud of.
 - downright terrible 1-on-1, 60% contest loss rate is abhorrent
 - zero penetration or damage with his disposal and prone to unforced turnovers
 - can’t keep his footing, constantly going to ground, missing tackles and just zero agility or athleticism to match up on smalls. Too weak one on one to match up on talls
 - too slow in transition for our game style, hence his low spoils/one percenters numbers because he can never actually cover enough ground to chop out our talls in the air which is his #1 role as a 3rd tall. Hes also slow to make a decision with ball in hand which isn’t a great trait in defence.

What he does well is he reads the play pretty well behind the ball so he puts himself in good positions when we have time to set up. Unfortunately most of the time he doesn’t have time to set up because he’s sooooo slow.

What are we doing here? We’re getting none of the benefits of playing an extra tall and none of the benefits of playing an extra small, but the cons of both?
