Port has to deal now, if a player wants out they want out and if trade value is going to be about the same then there's a bit too much risk in keeping him on the books. We lost leverage because we let Dunkley's contract expire, and while the Butters situation is different it'd be a gamble to expect his value to escalate over the next twelve months, rather, the big risk is in injury and his value flatlining or falling.

If you're going to eat shit you may as well do it straight away and all at once. Port should just get on with rebuilding and working towards their future under Carr right away.
    TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

They are in an interesting scenario aren't they?

Advantages to keeping him? Maybe giving themselves a chance for the 8 at a very long shot if everything goes better than 'right'. Giving Carr and the new regime something to sell to their member base. But aside from that, you're right - there's risk of injury, likelihood of not getting a deal anywhere near what they'd get now, and getting compensation in a draft dominated by Tasmania.

It's a bit of a test to see how business oriented footy clubs have become relative to other sports around the world. In many other sports, Port would trade him for as much as they can get, rip the band-aid off and start the rebuild. Criticism from media/fans wouldn't even come into decision making.

But as we know, the AFL isn't there quite yet. This could well be the year that changes with Butters, Petracca, Merrett etc.

i would do either. in my opinion . Nothing against sanders but hes not going to bust a game apart like butters. You have to give up something to get something

The concept is correct but Sanders hasn't asked to be traded. To me it's a different conversation if he asks the club to explore a deal.
Assuming we lose Marra and we know we have lost Smith and Dunkley that's a lot of top end 1st round type picks (Dunks was a 2nd rounder) to lose in a few years and adding Sanders to that doesn't help.

I don’t think anyone would want to kick Sanders out but if we were bringing in Butters I think he’d see the writing on the wall (and the club could nudge him there IF needed for butters)

He would have no clear path to a midfield spot or even a best 22 spot IMO, he’d be behind Bont, Richards, Butters, Freijah, Kennedy, Libba at least for a mid spot. I can’t see how we carry him on a flank any longer either so he wouldn’t even be in my starting team.

Maybe he’d be keen to to stay and win his spot in the midfield, especially post Libba will open up a little (but not much if we get Butters) and I’d applaud that decision but realistically I don’t think it would be hard to get him to agree that his future may lie elsewhere in the scenario that we bring in Butters.

You don't think Sanders said to his manager 'let's see what they offer' if he wasn't open to a trade?

Not sure Adelaide or Sanders would be prepared for this to come out in the media if it wasnt an option, but maybe this is just part of the shifting landscape ala. the Daicos trade question yesterday.

This potentially makes it much easier for us IF Sanders is open to a trade and IF Butters is really keen to get it done now.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

Add in trading 2-3 first round picks in the Butters deal and that's not a lot of top end talent coming through over many years.

But Butters is young, we got Croft and we've gotten lucky with Freijah. It's not the end of the world but the midfield stocks will become thin.

Surely the Crows check with Sanders management on if he is interested in a move, before asking the Dogs if he is available.
Very backward to do it the other way around.
One is making a decision around 1 of many on their list, taking up a small amount of their cap.
The other is deciding on his entire professional and financial future.

From what I've been told it's highly unlikely that Butters toured the facility yesterday.
