Cleary & Smith commit to the Kennel

The duo have re-signed with the Club on fresh deals.

    Just now
Bulldogs’ youngsters Luke Cleary and Lachlan Smith will remain in the red, white and blue into the future after committing to the Kennel on new deals.

Cleary, 23, has signed for two more seasons, extending him until the end of the 2027 season.

The defender has played an important role so far this campaign, averaging 13 touches across his eight matches for the Bulldogs’ senior side.

The former Sandringham Dragon was taken at Pick 61 in the 2021 AFL National Draft, playing 15 AFL games after his debut in 2022.

Ruckman Lachlan Smith has signed a one-year contract extension at Mission Whitten Oval, remaining with the Club until at least the end of the 2026 season.

Yet to debut at a senior level, Smith has shown positive signs for Footscray VFL in 2025.

Often taking on solo ruck responsibilities, the 19 year old, has averaged 36 hitouts and 15 disposals from his eight games this year, while also sneaking forward to kick four goals.

Bulldogs Executive Manager – Men’s Football, Sam Power was pleased to have the talented duo locked away for future seasons.

“While both Luke and Lachlan are relatively early in their football journey, both have shown traits that can help the Club moving forward,” Power said.

“Luke has taken a step forward in 2025, playing reliable football in the senior side as a defender, with plenty of upside given his age and talent.”

“Lachlan continues to grow in his role as a ruckman, showing great durability in the VFL program to back up each week as the sole big man.

“We’re excited to continue to watch him grow.”

The duo join Rory Lobb and Ed Richards as AFL players who have committed to the red, white and blue in the past month.

Good for Smith he's going to be a slow burn but I think after the extension he may be at risk if he doesn't have some improvement. I know his still very young as a ruck but there needs to be a slight upswing.

Is anyone else concerned all 4 of our Lachie/Lachlans are out of contract in 2026? Also both Bailey's out of contract in 2027! Seems like poor planning by Sam Power.

I assume that most members would be happier with a 2 year deal but to me Vandermeer has been both resilient and productive this year so has earned that extra season.
Time will tell if he can maintain his form and fitness.

Agree, Laitham has been much more consistent this year. Has mostly fixed the shockers and brain fades. He does appear to be an absolute pest on-field and "Mooooooorrrrooooooppppaannnahhhhh" is fun to yell at the tv or in the crowd.

                      LIBBA TO GO ON

TOM LIBERATORE is set to play on for a 16th season at the Western Bulldogs in 2026.

The 33-year-old is set to become just the 15th player in the club's history to reach 250 games next Thursday night against North Melbourne.

That milestone will mean the Liberatores – Tom and his father Tony – will become just the second father-son pairing to player 250 games each for the same club, joining Essendon greats Ken and Dustin Fletcher.

Liberatore is yet to sign a deal for 2026, but the Western Bulldogs have indicated they will re-sign him in the coming months.

The 2014 Charles Sutton medallist was at the crossroads in 2018 when he ruptured his second anterior cruciate ligament, but the inside midfielder has played some of his best football since then, finishing top- hree in four of the past five best and fairest counts.

Liberatore has played all 14 games to start 2025 and is understood to be keen to extend his career for as long as possible. – Josh Gabelich

Libba should just get a one year contract tattooed on that both sides can just sign In perpetuity.
