So is this normal to just put a player on the shelf and get him to bulk up? I would have thought that this should have been addressed in the pre-season.
I find it strange as well with Grant. I have heard Macca talk about Grant and his body shape. Talking to Rocket last year he said they tried all sorts of ways to get more bulk on him however, he put on little weight. Maybe as he matures he may. At least if he could increase his core strength that would help.
Yeah sorry for the double. I hit submit walked away and the message page was still open so hit submit again. It was only showing one message the second time around as well. Strange.

Seems very unusual. Bordering on tanking.
If you kicked five goals and Tom Boyd kicked five goals, Tom Boyd kicked more goals than you.
I'm not sure how cutting games out of a players routine and focussing on developing him physically when he's struggling at any level is tanking. I think it's smart if that's what they are doing.
He's not getting anywhere, might as well start now, perhaps he'll be rejuvinated for the remainder of the season when he returns.
Horse trainers spell their chargers when they need a rest. Perhaps some footballers need a break to recharge their batteries.

I saw big improvements in Grant so far this season. They knew he was lean Pre-Season if they wanted him to bulk up they should have done something about it then.
It's not that easy to just bulk up and stay fit at the same time, let alone with grants frame. If grant can put on another 3-4kg then he will be a lot more dangerous. Let's hope Macca sorts this out as I still have high hopes for Grant

He was dropped after a good game to accelerate his development, whilst he was still best 22.

Interesting seeing this thread revived. Dare I mention it, his kicking for goal from set shots is as bad as any of our forwards at the moment and that's saying something. I don't think its improved from the first time I saw him play in a preseason cup match. Sorry but I don't think he has a long term future with us. High draft pick that hasn't worked out. If anything I would go the other way with him and get him to slim down and concentrate on pace and stamina.
Really good analysis MJP of what would make us infinitely better with essentially the same personnel. We need to maximise the impact and assets of our game-breakers, and that means running half back for Bob and Griff, and outside for Cooney. Just because they can do other roles doesn't mean we sacrifice impact for flexibility. If it all goes awry we can always change things up but let's give these guys the chance to impact on the contest with as much effectiveness as possible.
DFA and DJ in the forward 50 is exactly what our front third needs right now. We need to conjure ugly goals from stoppages by preventing the opposition from waltzing out of our forward 50 unimpeded. Give them their head to really hunt the defenders and make them feel pressured into haphazard delivery, like our defenders are subjected to at the other end of the ground. Let's stop trying to create the aesthetically perfect goals like Arsenal try to do. I want to see plenty of dirty Stoke City style goalmouth scrambles this week!
But this year isnt about what we need right now though. Its about getting the foundation right for the next couple of years. That means our proper future forwards playing forward and learning how to do it right.
Personally I reckon the prioirty for Grant is to create/get to more contests. Bulk will help him win a few more but that doesnt matter if he cant get invlved in the first place.
As our coach likes to say its about edumacation for Grant, and I presume, some vicious 1:1 endurance training.

Not sure about that. He's improved his kicking at goal a heap. Remember when he first started? He'd struggle for distance from 40 out.
