If Essendon are allowed top up players and the other clubs don't, will they have more players on their list than us/saints/port/Dee's?

Essendon have lost 12 players and they can only top up 10.

I actually can't work out the maths behind this wonder if anyone else can?

Essendon lose 12 players from their main list and can recruit up to 10 top up players. They can also upgrade their five rookies, though I read in one article, that they were not allowed to have more than 40 players available for senior selection at any one time. Which means the number they upgrade is dependent on senior list injuries.

Port Adelaide, St Kilda, Melbourne and Bulldogs can upgrade rookies to replace their banned players. One for us, St Kilda and Melbourne, two at Port Adelaide.

So I don't see how Ken Hinkley's 'Essendon have 43 and we have 42' thing works?

It can only relate to the number of rookies Port Adelaide will have left which means they chose not to draft the maximum number originally. Hinkley's real concern is that he is down a ruckman and he wants to be able to pick up a ready to go journeyman ruckman for this year.

Essendon started with 39 main list + 6 rookies = 45. They lose 12 and gain 10
Port started with 39 main list + 5 rookies = 44. They lose 2 and gain 0

Thanks. That's what I thought. Port always had one player less than Essendon on its list.
