Phantom Draft & Expert Predictions on Dogs Pick

    Cal Twomey:

Pick 18: South Australian Will Hayward shot up the draft board late in the year with some great performances at under-18 level. The exciting half-forward kicked nine goals in a preliminary final and four goals the Grand Final, and is likely to be the first player from his state to be picked. The Dogs like natural footballers – their flag team was built on them – and Hayward has shown his instincts as a great overhead mark and a prospect with good goal sense.

Around the mark: Jy Simpkin, Jordan Gallucci, Jarrod Berry

Jy Simpkin is a player who could be a nice pick-up at this stage, having fallen off the radar a little with his broken leg. Simpkin is a creative half-forward/midfielder who showed great signs last year as a bottom-ager for Vic Country. If not for the injury, he would likely have been in regular discussions as a possible top-10 pick. He has been steadily recovering from the injury and should be right to go for the pre-season

Jarrod Berry - Some knocks and niggles have thrown around Berry's season but his best form of the year has come recently after returning from a knee injury. The Rebels captain has been playing in the midfield and up forward, and has shown his power, athleticism and overhead marking. He's also reminded clubs of his toughness and attack on the ball. Berry was an All Australian half-back last year as a bottom ager, but clubs are mixed on where he plays at the next level – some seeing him as a midfield option, others as a third tall defender who can rebound. His rough run with injuries continued on the weekend after going to hospital with a badly bruised kidney.

Jordan Gallucci wins plenty of contested ball and hunts it at the stoppages. He offers more than just an in-and-under type, however, with his breakaway speed and run often getting him into open space. He has shown an ability to kick goals – he booted five one week for the Eastern Ranges at TAC Cup level – and is a professional, steady character determined to do well. He was a co-captain of Vic Metro's division one winning team at the carnival

    The Roar:

Pick 18 – Western Bulldogs – Jarrod Berry
    Half-back – 191cm, 80kg
    Plays like: Shaun Burgoyne
Pick 18 is a tad low for Berry, who has impressed all year. The defender has a great football brain and can go through the midfield too. He kicks well, and I love the way he runs off half-back. Berry goes hard for the football and is an ideal pick for the Swans since they will farewell Jarrad McVeigh in coming years.

      Paige Cardona:

      18: WESTERN BULLDOGS

      Jy Simpkin | Fwd | Murray Bushrangers | 181 cm, 73 kg

Touted as a top 5 pick at the start of the season, Simpkin suffered a broken leg and only played one game for the season. His draft range is still fairly unknown due to his injury although I think he will still sit within the first 20 picks. We should get a better grasp on his range as reports are he will be attending the NAB AFL combine.

      26: Western Bulldogs

      Sam Powell-Pepper | Mid | East Perth | 186 cm, 83 kg

An absolute bull of a player, Powell-Pepper has the body to play AFL footy immediately. He’s had a taste of senior football in the WAFL this year already, playing five games for Eagles affiliate East Perth – including their elimination final loss. He returned to his own age group to play in the Colts final and dominated with 22 touches and four goals. West Coast will no doubt have been watching closely, and would have hoped to see him slide.

I'm hoping Venables slides to 18. Powerful in the contest, handy around the goals.

Not sure at 26. If Hayward slides, he'd suits us. Might even be a shot at 18. Watch his footage from the SANFL U/18 prelim. Outrageous.

I'd love to take a flier at Ben Long if he lasts to pick 50.

Whatever happens, I'm stoked we got that extra pick in the 20s. Very confident Dalrymple can find some gems.

Matt Balmers from AFL Draft Central would have us with The Doctors favourite Griffin Logue at #18 and Zachary Sproule at #26

I'm liking the sound of Will Hayward - a player who can hit the scoreboard and potentially play a few roles - in any event, will be interesting to see where he lands in the draft.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

He has some of the attributes of Mason Redmond from last year and he was a player I thought we should have drafted. He didn't do a lot of testing at the combine but his sprinting and jumping results were impressive.

I think there is a link with Simpkin and us because I believe he's been down at the club. Hayward makes some sense given his late season form and Berry who is a good footballer gives the club an added bonus if successful of being from Ballarat given our push into that region.

Powell-Pepper is an exciting player as well.

                            interview with Hayward
Hayward continued his strong form during the second half of the season with the Roosters’ Under-18 side, booting nine goals in the Macca’s Cup Preliminary Final and four in the Grand Final at Adelaide

No doubt going by previous drafting history SD will pick someone no one will be expecting.
Is there any Caleb Daniel types in the draft?
