    Re: Footscary Recruits for 2018

The rumours were true, although no mention of player welfare or a formal coaching position.

    Monfries signs with Footscray Bulldogs

Footscray has added further talent to its VFL list, with the signing of former Port Adelaide forward Angus Monfries.

Throughout his 13-year AFL career, Monfries kicked 248 goals over 211 games with both Essendon and Port Adelaide.

Departing Essendon at the end of 2012, Monfries continued his stellar career at the Power for five years, before he announced his AFL retirement at the end of the 2017 season.

Monfries spoke to westernbulldogs.com.au about his decision to continue his football at Victoria University Whitten Oval.

“Coming over from Adelaide and playing at Port last year, I was keen to stay involved in the AFL industry,” he said.

“To be involved at an AFL Club at VFL level is something that really appealed to me.

“With the age of the list, I’ll try to help them as much as I can with the experience that I've gained through a 13-year AFL career.

“I’ll keep training standards high and really try to strive, as the boys did last year playing finals. I think that’s what we all play for.”

Footscray coach Steve Grace said Monfries’ experience and leadership will complement the Bulldogs’ young side.

“Angus brings a wealth of AFL experience, and we look forward to witnessing what he can offer to our younger players in terms of leadership and guidance, both on and off the field,” he said.

“He will form a positive on-field relationship with AFL and VFL listed players alike and have a strong influence on the competition alongside our other forwards during the 2018 VFL season.”

Monfries was selected by Essendon with pick 14 at the 2004 NAB AFL Draft, and was the Bombers’ leading goalkicker in 2010.

He comes straight out of the AFL system, and if nothing else we could do with His smarts in the forward 50. If he puts in and he's making all the right noises he will be a good recruit who will help materially in winning this year's flag. It's been two years since we won a VFL flag, best we pull our finger out.

2014, 2016, etch our name on the 2018 cup. We are due.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

With a full list to choose from, the VFL side should be chock full of AFL listed players pushing their case for a senior side call up. I tend to agree we must be good chances for the 2018 VFL flag. Really looking fwd to getting to these games both at WO and around the ‘burbs.

Given a good run with injury we should be sending out some very strong VFL teams which in turn should put a bit of pressure on the AFL players to play well.

I saw a post on FB from one of the Footscray forums that Nick Jamieson has apparently announced on social media that he is leaving Footscray. He will be a huge loss based on what I have read here and elsewhere.

                  Re: Footscary Recruits for 2018

I was at the VFL Final vs Port Melbourne and was told by an Old Scotch Ammos mate of Jamieson that he intended finishing up with Footscray and was going back to play with his mates. I thought it disappointing at the time given how well he played in the VFL side (he was Footscray's 2017 B&F winner and represented the VFL in the interstate game). Suggests that the social media story is likely true.

I am not really upset however with his departure - felt sometimes he held onto the ball too long and didn't always make the best decisions with ball in hand. I am probably more in the 'boat' that we should turn over our VFL listed players every 3 years if they can't go the next level and bring in more untried players from the TAC system who failed to get drafted.

I was happy to see Gowers get a gig with the AFL side, more as a result of him playing in our VFL side, as I think he will likely struggle to get an AFL game given the competition for the small/medium forward role within our team. He does have a ready made body for AFL footy however and can take a strong mark for his size.

If I go to a few VFL games at WO this year would be great to catch up Smads. Went to both western derbies last year Willy and Werribee at WO and the Tigers game at Etihad.

Hopefully like Twodogs has said we can win it this year.

Reuben William who was a Brisbane Lions rookie will be playing at Footscray. There is a bit to like about him

Monfries, William and of course Prudden will be good additions at Footscray

Do you rate Gowers as bad a kick as Twodogs does? I haven't seen enough of him to make judgement but what I have seen didn't suggest he was a bad kick.

His shooting at goal ranges from distinctly ordinary to bloody horrible.

Do you remember that guy at Geekong called Peter Johnston. Took great marks performed amazingly brace acts but unless his shot was from the square...

He was the best comparison in terms game style I thought. Billy is that forward with the ability to plant himself and not be easily moved out of the contest or come over the top and take the big speccy. Maybe not as bad but I checked his goalkicking in the 2 finals. 2.1 v Essendon the first week when we won 96-91 but 1.4 in week two when we were bundled out by Port by 20 points. 20.28 for the season, 17.23 for the H&A season.

Goal kicking accuracy isn't as easy as just looking at percentage eg was he on the boundary, was he under pressure, how far out was he,how many were on windy or wet days?
Also depends on game plan, was he forced to run on an angle to get the ball, giving the full forward more a straight lead up?
I don't know any of the answers but those things also need to be looked at more than just percentage.
