But how would we know there’s no interest, until all clubs pass a player up at the draft? Auto-selecting rookies is going to hurt smaller clubs and/or lower finishing clubs. If we wanted to use pick 5 in the RD for instance and were denied... Then what’s the point of good RD picks like we have this year.

Are Freo using this on Apeness? To avoid clubs using late ND picks on him?

I think it means if he is not selected in the rookie draft. Surely a player can't choose not to nominate at the Rookie draft and then get picked up in some post Rookie session for Rookies that haven't been picked up. That would be beyond crooked.

I hope it does mean that and Essendon are counting their chickens only for us to swoop in and take him with a late rookie pick.

Again the AFL looking to make up rules to suit want they want.

The retirement of Leuenberger at Essendon is not what the rule is about, as it is before the list is finalised.

That rookie list replacement was clearly intended for the replacement of someone lost to injury or retirement AFTER the list was finalised at the time of the drafts.

Letting Clarke go to Essendon or Mumford go to GWS without going through the draft just compromises the whole process.

Th afl trying to help a failed experiment because they have a salary graph problem
And quietly helping a club who have a history of tweaking the rules , window dressing it as being fairer and transparent to all clubs

Just because a ruckman on their list has retired it has left a hole on their list and Zac Clarke has become available
You can’t be more than cynical that some lobbying has been happening behind closed doors. Anything goes when with the bigger clubs

Who is really counting thto 5182 days essendon have not played In a final ? I will count when there is another 365 days

We need a strong Essendon for the AFEL. It's a must. I'm glad the AFEL have finally realised that they need to cheat with, and cheat for, a stronger Essendon. How are Essendon meant to get strong with only a show trial to convince WADA justice was done, 12 top up players outside the cap, pick 1, ignoring the current or rather non existent salary cap, giving them Friday night fixtures and exposure without merit, giving them Good Friday and so on. Being annoyed about this situation where there's abuse of situation and conspiracy to deprive clubs like ours and St Kilda to grab Clarke early in the rookie draft is just more sooking by everyone not affiliated with Essendon or the AFEL. I wish we'd all just *!*!*!*! off about our 'waa waa integrity of the sport is paramount, waa waa' and 'Sooky us, they're burning the fabric of our game to reward proven drug cheats while working to harm the other clubs as a result, whinge, whinge, *!*!*!*!ing whinge'. We are just being selfish, expecting a selfless custodian of the game.

Aren't those clubs just being smart? It gives them a free look at delisted/ex-AFL players before having to commit to a list spot. I also happen to think it is completely stupid that delisted players have to be drafted to go to another club...they should be able to sign wherever they want 2nd time around...it isn't as if they are 'out of contract' and effectively turning into an inadvertent free-agent...they were let go by their previous clubs and just want to play footy. If this rule enables it, why not.

I don't think Zac Clarke is any good - actually, I know he isn't - but if Essendon want to find that out first hand well good luck to them.

My take is that the draft should only go to the end of the 'listed' spots and rookies should be free to sign wherever they think they have the best chance of making it...after all, they get paid stuff all so why do the clubs get to do things like relocate them all over the country. Draft them - or they are free to sign anywhere they want as rookie free agents.
