If this rule enables it, why not.

I don't think Zac Clarke is any good - actually, I know he isn't - but if Essendon want to find that out first hand well good luck to them.

My take is that the draft should only go to the end of the 'listed' spots and rookies should be free to sign wherever they think they have the best chance of making it...after all, they get paid stuff all so why do the clubs get to do things like relocate them all over the country. Draft them - or they are free to sign anywhere they want as rookie free agents.
Exactly, if the outcome of helping Essendon in this case is Zac Clarke clogging up a spot on Essendon's list that could go to a developing player or a player who can play footy instead then I am all for it.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

What if the rule was in last year and they took Gowers from under us? Does that change anything?

If the rule was in last year, I'm almost certain we would've been the ones taking Gowers in that same manner. Either way, rule itself is fine for the exact reason mjp mentioned.

I don't disagree with your point about what the rule should be.

What I do disagree with is the process that has allowed it to occur this time.

It is also wrong that it only applies if players have been out for a year and we could not rookie Tom Campbell this year under the same rule.

I agree BJ, I might have missed it but I wonder when these new rules were decided on?
Was it done when Mumford decided he wanted to return to football but of course only wanted to go to one club?

It is typical of the AFL to invent a rule to permit the outcome they desire.

But if another club wanted him and offered him a little something extra, then perhaps he chooses that club. Maybe he likes big games, spongy floors and bags of cash, who knows. For the good points Mike makes, there's some counter points. But it feels like we are moving towards being half pregnant with the draft now. The AFEL need to go the whole way then and offer something similar for clubs with their own VFL teams and their players being immediate rookies irrespective of whether their former AFEL players or not.

Yeah, but it's not like the draft has been and gone and Zac Clarke wasn't selected

Agree. We lack pace and pressure in the forward 50 - think he'd make us a better side next year.

Quite amazed that Mitch Grigg was overlooked again (both for a senior list spot and rookie spot) after winning the Magarey and a ridiculous best on showing in the GF (31 touches and 6 goals).

He is one of those free hit players too (having previously been on an AFL list). Is he a terrible bloke? Is there an incriminating video of him out there waiting to surface?

Surely someone would take a punt. Gold Coast?

It's weird how many times some guys get overlooked.

Pods was under our nose but it took a few extra years before Geelong took the punt on him and he was a decent footballer (liek Grigg he's previously been in the system).
Barlow was a revelation at Freo until injury.
Ben Hudson was a solid first ruck for the Crows then us for many years.
Dane Rampe was under our noses too.

Jye Bolton possibly a bit unlucky too.

                            SO. Here's the thing.

Clubs don't look to the 2nd tier for ball winning mids. They already have blokes who can get it 30+ times week in, week out at state league level who are unable to get a game...not to mention their elite ball winners who are playing at AFL level. An example at our club has been Webb who is a highly effective VFL mid but cannot sniff it at AFL level.

What they are looking for is role players with a unique skillset. Look at the state league recruits who have been selected this year and you will find they are all 'limited' footballers but they have 1-2 things that they do EXTREMELY well...and those skills will 100% translate to a role within a TEAM.

I feel sorry for guys like Grigg (who is 100% good enough to be on an AFL list) but he is only ever going to be a backup at AFL level - the clubs just are not looking for players like him. They are looking for versatile defenders, mids who have shown the ability to go forward for extended periods of time and kick goals (or, equally, play as a either a lock down defender or running defender who is exceptional by foot)...or they are looking for young ruckman who have a competitive streak and don't reach for the ball in a contest.

This is not rocket science and - if the AFL is Grigg's dream - then his club are doing him a disservice by playing him in the role I saw him in during the grand final...he will never (ever) get drafted doing that. NEVER. (Caveat. If the mid-season draft comes in and someone has one trillion injuries, he MIGHT get a go).
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

Whereas his teammate Michael Gibbons, probably the best midfielder in the VFL for the last 3 years and similarly undersized like Cavarra, once again missed out.
