VFL Report | ‘Scray survive Blues scare

The Footscray Bulldogs have won their fourth consecutive game of the VFL season, defeating Carlton by 18 points in an edge-of-your-seat match at VU Whitten Oval on Sunday afternoon.

Despite a final-quarter comeback from the Blues, the Bulldogs were able to settle the nerves with three late majors, recording a 11.11 (77) to 8.11 (59) victory.

It was a hard-fought, heavily contested battle between the two teams throughout the entirety of the match, but the fourth term was where it went to another level.

Lewis Young was the ‘Scray’s defensive saviour as the Blues began their comeback, finishing the game with 31 disposals and a game-high 17 marks.

Charlie Cormack (21 disposals, eight marks) and Reuben William (18 disposals, seven marks) were also composed in the backline throughout the final quarter.

The Bulldogs conceded five straight goals in the final term, allowing the visitors to level things up on the scoreboard.

With scores all tied up, the ‘Scray increased their intensity.

Led by Mitch Wallis (29 disposals, nine marks, four tackles and a goal) in the midfield, the Dogs were able to control the ball and remain calm towards the end of the game.

With key forward Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (head knock) ruled out after quarter-time, Josh Schache stepped up and presented strongly - slotting three crucial goals, one of which put his side back in front in the final minutes.

Cody Weightman (nine disposals, six tackles, two goals) and Ben Cavarra (21 disposals, two goals) were strong in their small forward roles, each adding important goals late to seal the win.

The ‘Scray will head into a bye next weekend undefeated, before looking ahead to a Friday night clash against Frankston away on May 21.

Interesting weightman not listed in the best. I missed last qtr but was at the game for the other 3 and I thought he was amongst the best, and not just because of his screamer. Also thought Garcia was a bit fumbly & had more turnovers this week whereas last week I thought was very good. Agree Wallis was good.

Does anyone know where list of vfl players with jumper numbers or at least photos is available? Dogs website has no photos & no jumper numbers.

          Agree re Weightman.
Also Jesse Glass- McCasker did a good job in the ruck against Tom de Koning, especially around the ground where he outbodied him consistently.
The VFL App has team lists with jumper numbers in the Match Centre section.

I think he should be on our AFL list.

                VFL player summary: Round 4

Footscray head coach Stewart Edge shares his thoughts on the 10 AFL-listed players and standout VFL-listed players who featured in the Bulldogs’ 18-point win over Carlton VFL on Sunday.

                Lewis Young

                31 disposals, 17 marks, seven rebound 50s

“’Lewy’ had a good intercept game – he showed some leadership among the defence being the only AFL player at that end of the ground. On the whole, we thought he used the footy better than he has, but the strength of his game was his intercept marking and spoiling.”

                Mitch Wallis

29 disposals, nine marks, five tackles, one goal

“In a really contested game, Mitch led with contested possessions and clearances so his inside and midfield game was great. It was a really strong performance – he’s playing more as a midfielder with us than he might otherwise, but his contribution was impressive.”

                Josh Schache

13 disposals, six marks, three goals

“’Schach’ finished up with three goals, but had a tough day against the Carlton defenders. He kept on going and ended up kicking the goal that got us back in front, after competing in an important ruck contest. His persistence was really important.”

                Louis Butler

19 disposals, six marks, five inside 50s

“Louis’ athletic traits are impressive – his run was incredible from goal-line to goal-line. He’s continuing to work on his aerial game, but his involvements as a winger at both ends of the ground was outstanding.”

                Cody Weightman

Nine disposals, six tackles, two goals

“This was probably Cody’s best game for the year. Surprisingly his stats were low, but he was massive in terms of influence. His defending in the front half was great, and he was really impressive in his capacity to impact the game without the ball in hand.”

                Jamarra Ugle-Hagan

                Two disposals, one goal

“Jamarra got off to a good start before receiving that head knock. We knew coming up against Carlton that manic forward pressure would be important, and he actually led the way for that in the early stages of the game. He had a real appetite to help us keep the ball in our forward half.”

                Ben Cavarra

21 disposals, five marks, six inside 50s, two goals

“Ben played both forward and wing time. His contribution was impressive – he generated scoring shots through intercepts, turnovers and tackles. It was nice that he had the flexibility to help us on the wings.”

                Dom Bedendo

12 disposals, three tackles, seven inside 50s, one goal

“Dom is getting better each week. He kicked three goals last week, but this was probably a better performance in many ways. His ability to connect to other forwards and be involved in scoring chains was a step forward towards a more complete game.

                Roarke Smith

                15 disposals, four tackles

“As a winger, Roarke helped out our defenders enormously – as a defender himself that’s a natural disposition he has. The next step for Roarke is to also be an offensive threat.”

                Riley Garcia

22 disposals, six tackles, four inside 50s

“Riley played a lot more forward time than he has in the past, so he’s learning that role having mostly done his best work as a midfielder. When he went into the midfield, he was a valuable contributor. Adding the forward stuff to his game is the next step.”

                On VFL-listed players…

“We had 11 guys out there who had played four games or less – so to come up against a more experienced Carlton team, it was a really good win. Charlie Cormack (22 disposals, nine marks, nine rebounds 50s) as an intercept defender was terrific. The skipper Lachie Sullivan (25 disposals, seven marks, three inside 50s) was really influential through the midfield too, after taking a heavy hit early. You could see how important the win was for these guys who have got a little more experience - he led beautifully.”

Re: VFL Fixture 2021 and Game Day Thread

Big improvement in reviews. They remind me of having to be positive with all language in school reports as a teacher now. Here is my added reality.

He is a flake with the ball but today wasn't as bad as usual. We are only using good instead of great intercept mark as we don't rate him much at the moment

Bevo told us to play him in the midfield

                  Josh Schache

13 disposals, six marks, three goals

“’Schach’ finished up with three goals, but had a tough day against the Carlton defenders. He kept on going and ended up kicking the goal that got us back in front, after competing in an important ruck contest. His persistence was really important.”

He won't get a call up for awhile, if ever again, but good on him for not quitting yet

                  Louis Butler

19 disposals, six marks, five inside 50s

“Louis’ athletic traits are impressive – his run was incredible from goal-line to goal-line. He’s continuing to work on his aerial game, but his involvements as a winger at both ends of the ground was outstanding.”

Talking aerial focus has reminded me of the next guy

He is raw AF but we like what we see

                  Roarke Smith

                  15 disposals, four tackles

“As a winger, Roarke helped out our defenders enormously – as a defender himself that’s a natural disposition he has. The next step for Roarke is to also be an offensive threat.”

He is pretty bloody limited but he works hard

                  Riley Garcia

22 disposals, six tackles, four inside 50s

“Riley played a lot more forward time than he has in the past, so he’s learning that role having mostly done his best work as a midfielder. When he went into the midfield, he was a valuable contributor. Adding the forward stuff to his game is the next step.”

This is a perfect example of stats not telling the full story. I'd love to see 'pressure acts" (if they're even kept at VFL level). I've been pleasantly surprised by Weightman in the glimpses I've seen this year - mostly because he's never out of the contest which again is something that doesn't show up on the stats sheet. He has a bit of energy to his game I think will be important 2/3rds during the season when the grind starts to get some AFL guys a little flat. May well end up a bit of a late season wildcard who keeps his spot for the finals.

A lot of us were hard on Weightman in 2020 and while I had some concerns, it would have been bloody difficult for a new draftee to come in and impact during COVID. Hard enough to adjust to senior footy, let alone dealing with everything else that 2020 threw up.

Looks like he has settled and is playing some good footy. Keen to see him play in the seniors soon.

At the end of this article (https://www.afl.com.au/news/616322/-...-the-ball-rule) there's this line.

No.1 draft pick Jamarra Ugle-Hagan won't be available for the VFL this week as he continues his recovery from concussion.
Looking at it, it seems like it will be exactly 12 days since his concussion (Sunday 9th to Fri 21st) which I believe means he should be available if he's overcome the concussion. Not sure exactly though.

Looking at it, it seems like it will be exactly 12 days since his concussion (Sunday 9th to Fri 21st) which I believe means he should be available if he's overcome the concussion. Not sure exactly though.
Bevo referred to him not playing as 'technical' as it was right on the 12 day threshold, rather than any symptoms stopping him.

I dare say given Bevo's tone, if it was a cut throat final, Marra would likely be playing.
