Any seasoned ruckman training over summer would be good. It will shows Tim, Lobb and Sweet have it all. Or it will show us a seasoned genuine number one ruck has an advantage.

Will be interesting how many we invite. A few years ago we went with three (Raak, Scott & Preston).

The way Milesi spoke the other day has me convinced Baker is coming (along with him not nominating for the drafts).

What is the advantage of just signing a player outside of the draft as opposed to putting them on the rookie list?

I used to be up with all this list loopholes a while back, now I have no idea. I have no idea on why we're after Baker either?

              Clubs are using different approaches.
To me if you rookie list the player now then you are stuck with that player and you can't adjust the list in case of a LT injury.
If you keep the spots open and invite a couple of players to train with you then you have a better chance to gauge their value.
If you wait to the Supplemental Selection Period to sign a player or two then you have the chance to adjust the balance of the list.
Some will also keep a spot open for the mid season draft. It really depends on how clubs view their list.

                Re: 2022 Draft Watch

The original design of the rookie list was to provide a chance for the clubs to bring in a couple of deserved youngsters.
Of course clubs found ways to exploit it and now we have a lot highly experienced players being given rookie list spots.
We either needs to change the name of it or just provide clubs with some extra spots if we are going to bring the likes of Phil Davis and Paul Seedsman back in.

In the long run I think it will impact emerging ruckman who typically need extra time to develop.

I won’t repeat my long post from the other week. Time to kill the PSD, RD (& Cat A Rl) and DFA windows (draft in one or two nights). Extend the list and let any and all DFAs join whoever across the SSP. At the very minimum.

Yeah one big list would be fine, and after a certain pick 1 year contracts for draftees instead of two would be fine.

Also if clubs have the salary cap space I don't see why they shouldn't be able to add more players to the list. Could be a minor way to help the struggling clubs get more talent to churn through than the good sides.
I should leave it alone but you're not right

Yep, This might need a bit of work to 'rort proof' it but I think clubs should have to have a minimum of say 42 players on their list but they can also have a maximum of 48 if they stay under the cap.
The recruitment process has become far to complex and now clubs can even give away draft picks if it's going to help fix their salary cap. I also question if the focus on draft points adds a lot of value.

                      It needs to be simplified.

One trade period, one draft period and one SSP before the start of the season.

Pick 11 - In the mix will be Jedd Busslinger, Ed Allan and Oliver Hollands with an outside chance a highly rated player slides down the order and changes our thinking. I think Busslinger is the player we will pick.

Pick 21 - In the mix will be Josh Weddle, Brayden George and Olli Hotton with other chances likely to include Charlie Clarke, Jacob Kostanty, Joe Richards, Coby Burgiel and maybe Lewis Hayes if we don't get Busslinger. It will be out of George, Hotton or Clarke. Clarke is the strong mail.

Pick 39 - This is where it becomes a lot harder to pick which players in the mix but maybe Coby Burgiel, Ethan Phillips, James Van Es, Harvey Gallagher and Bailey MacDonald.

If it was my selections and allowing for what I think might happen I'd go with:
                        11 - Ed Allan
                        21 - Olli Hotton
                        39 - Harvey Gallagher

Allan (194cm) could play a bit of senior football next season and his speed, size and versatility will appeal. He has plenty of upside despite missing a lot of footy this season.

Hotton (181cm) seems to be under rated mainly based on him starting the season as a small forward before really starting to perform in the midfield. His game against SA is where he really stood out. He has plenty of speed and athleticism plus he is a very good kick and we need players who can kick the ball accurately.

Gallagher (179cm) just had a very good season and has played as a forward where he was capable of kicking multiple goals in a couple of games but performed even better as a defender where his accurate kicking was a feature. A real hard working and smart defender who could be quickly groomed as a replacement for Taylor Duryea.

As a summary - That's 3 very versatile and athletic players and who I would regard as well above average with their kicking skills.

I'd really like to have selected Brayden George but assuming we don't get any pick swaps done it's hard to see us taking that chance with pick 11 but he could very well be worth it and he shouldn't be there at 21. Josh Weddle would be a terrific pick up but it's hard to see us taking him at 11 and he is very likely to be gone before 21.

                        My top 10 is:
                        1 - Ashcroft
                        2 - Cadman
                        3 - Wardlaw
                        4 - Phillipou
                        5 - Tsatas
                        6 - Humphrey
                        7 - Ginbey
                        8 - Clark
                        9 - George
                        10 - Sheezel

I can't understand why North aren't taking Phillipou at 4.
This ended up being some good projections for us. Most in the media must have known our interest in Buss and Clarke and getting Gallagher was an excellent observation on your behalf. How do you think the 3 of them will go?

The first two selections were being frequently speculated on so no biggie there and Gallagher really looked impressive in the 2nd half of the season.

My picks were based on what I thought our intentions might be given some comments Milesi made in the week before the draft so I thought we might be about getting athletic and versatile types. As it turned out our picks whilst very much on how we rated players on our talent order also ended up addressing our needs of a key defender and an impactful small forward and then Gallagher has become that smaller and versatile defender.
What I liked about Gallagher is his ability to read the play and exploit it. He's a very good interceptor and an accurate kick. How he defends 1 v 1 might determine how we best use him.

Just saw that one of the clubs referred to Sydney as Bidney. Love it.

I think we are number 2 or 3 on the list of clubs who have unsuccessfully bid on players only to have them matched.

My question is do you think we missed anyone by a pick or two or did our draft order stand up and we grabbed the best ones?

I think we hit our list to what we probably expected. I wonder if Phillipou was available if we would have taken him plus Hollands might have been hard for us to pass on. Other than that we probably got our targets.
