    VFL 2024 Season

    SMITHY?S VFL

The 2024 Smithy?s VFL home and away season will consist of 21 rounds, with all teams to play 18 matches.

A competition bye will be scheduled across the weekend of April 6-7 when the VFL will take on the SANFL in a representative clash in Adelaide during the AFL Gather Round weekend.

It will be the VFL?s first representative game since 2017 and the first time the VFL takes on the SANFL since 2016.

The 2024 Smithy?s VFL season will again feature a Wildcard Round following its introduction in 2023.

Wildcard Round will see the team that finishes the home and away season in seventh position on the ladder play against the team that finishes 10th, while eighth will take on ninth. The two winners will advance to the 2024 Smithy?s VFL Finals Series.

Wildcard Round will be played on the weekend of August 24-25, with the opening weekend of the 2024 Smithy?s VFL Finals Series, featuring the qualifying and elimination finals, to then follow during the AFL pre-finals bye.

The 2024 Smithy?s VFL Grand Final is scheduled to be played on Sunday, September 22, the weekend before the 2024 Toyota AFL Grand Final.

The AFL can confirm the 2024 Smithy?s VFL season will again feature the same 21 teams from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland who competed in 2023.

Sticking with wildcard round, because that's something that everyone totally wants.

21 teams. 21 rounds. 18 matches each team.
        Good maths.
I guess playing each team one time plus a bye is too hard.

          Re: VFL 2024 Season

In terms of who haven't signed on for next season

TO BE CONFIRMED: Angus Bade, Jamieson Ballantyne, Josh Chatfield, Cooper Craig-Peters, Nathan Drummond, Jarrod Gilbee, Luke Goater, Ned Harris, Ethan Hunt, Josh Kellett, Cameron Kizan, Will Lewis, Charlie Macisaac, Cayden Maki, Daniel Orgill, Josh Patullo, Jay Rantall, Connor Smith, Riley Smith, Lachie Sullivan, Daniel Tallariti, Sam Willoughby, Bailey Young.

I would 100% keep the following

          Chatfield
          Craig-Peters
          Gilbee
          Goater
          Harris
          Hunt
          Kellett
          Lewis
          Orgill
          Sullivan

Drummond missed a lot through injury so can take and leave him.

Bade & Ballantyne are take or leave players and probably break glass in case of emergency players.

I have no clue who Kizan, Maki or Tallarati are.

Rantall was pretty unlucky with injury so I'd be fine with him taking another go around.

Patullo only played when Sweet and Darcy were out. Will Lewis is a guy that can pinch hit in the ruck along with being able to play forward so I'm more in favor of keeping him.

Macisaac and Willoughby did some decent stuff, I'd be fine with them sticking around but ideally they don't play that many games because that would indicate the well being dry.

I don't remember much of Connor or Riley Smith.

Wasn't super impressed by Bailey Young but he was having his first taste of state football, probably would lose him TBH.

I’m not a fan of it. I think it rewards mediocrity.

Hoping Footscray VFL can build on last season.

It will be great for players and supporters to be back home this season. i think we did very well last season considering we travelled all over the countryside.

It's a really important component of playing on the home ground with a decent support. We didn't have that last year.

I haven’t been to a VFL game since they stopped playing there, I love my VFL so looking forward to getting back into it .. Friday week being my exciting return , check out the ground, catch up with a few of the boys. Beer and hot dog or pie in between the two interchange boxes .
Been doing it since once the late 70s .

Sullivan has been picked up by Collingwood in the Supplemental Draft, big loss there.

I imagine that Josh Chatfield is the next captain, we don't really have any experienced players left besides Drummond and he can barely get out there. IIRC Chatfield was pretty highly rated for his leadership capabilities as a junior

There were a few impressive new youngsters playing yesterday but I agree that there could be a drop in experience for the Footscray side without Sullivan, MacPherson and Garner etc.

My guess for next VFL captain is Cooper Craig-Peters - much in the Sullivan mould but even shorter. Was the best of the VFL top up players used on Wednesday.
There is no sadder sight than a young pessimist.
