I might venture down to Skilled Stadium this weekend instead of Burbank.

I ended up going to watch Williamstown who suffered their first defeat for the season with a nail biting 2 point loss to the Roosters.

The reserves had an easy enough win.

The reserves had a nice win.

White - spent a fair bit of time in defence and even did the kick in duties. He had a good enough game.

Shaw - finally starting to influence games and did well n the centre with his hit outs and his marking was OK.

Lynch - kicked a couple of goals plus applied his normal defensive efforts. They shuffled him around a fair bit today.

Roughead - wasn't a noticeable performer and in fact spent a fair bit of the last quarter on the bench. Looked to have a minor leg injury.

Ogle - rarely sighted and had minimal impact.

Mulligan - well down on last weeks performance but was a solid enough defender.

Daniels - still short of a gallop after his extended spell but was very classy and worked hard. Seemed to be wearing the GPS vest.

                Seniors game to follow.

When will Lynch be promoted GVGjr?

Seems to dominate VFL reseveres to a certain extent?

                    Re: Williamstown vs North Ballarat

After a slow start where North Ballarat kicked 3 of the first 4 goals Williamstown answered the challenge and lead at quarter time by about 3 goals. From then on North Ballarat chipped away and played a lot of pressure football. Williamstown had their chances in the last quarter but a combination of poor skills and Cloke leaving Wundke unguarded in a marking contest on the goal line saw North Ballarat home in a thriller.

                    The scores:

                    2009 VFL Seniors
                    Williamstown 6.2 8.5 12.6 15.8 (98)
                    North Ballarat 3.3 7.7 12.11 14.16 (100)

                    GOALS:

The Williamstown seniors have an abundance of small forwards and midfielders like Rose and Stretton so it's no easy task for him. Having said that his form on the field probably warrants a promotion.

Lynch proved once again that he is just a class above this level. He kicked 3, but he also brought players into the game through his creativity and clean kicking. My only concern with his game today was the amount of times he went to ground when trying to lay a tackle, meaning he was out of the contest when his opponent broke free.

Roughead's disposal was down slightly, but his work around the ground was very, very good. He took a number of strong marks and was used as the designated 'kick to' man from the kick ins. He was also good below his knees and can't be far off from playing seniors.

Ogle really struggled today. His disposal under pressure was concerning, and he got lost a number of times in defence. Obviously, he is a work in progress but he has a long way to go.

White did some nice things - one contest stayed in my mind where he went back with the flight against two opponents, got the ball to ground then locked it in for long enough so a team mate could win the ball. Didn't run and carry a lot as he was played mainly as a lock down defender, but he was solid enough.

I thought Mulligan had a great game - certainly the best I've seen him play. His spoiling was great, just timed them really well and he even out marked his opponent a few times. He has the build to play on genuine, gorilla forwards which is something we lack - I'm not saying he could replace Lake if he went down but I like the way he's developing.

Shaw continues to work hard and as GVG said, he did have an influence and was a strong target up forward. He and Roughy were just too good for their direct opponents and really gave the midfielders first use.

Daniels didn't get a lot of it but won some contested ball which released the outside runners. He clearly needs more match fitness but I'm hopeful he'll have a big second half of the season.

For me, Mulligan was our best for Willy, with Roughy and Lynch also in the best handful. Rampe was classy for the Seagulls and is definitely too good for the reserves.

                            Re: Williamstown vs North Ballarat

I missed the reserves but went to the seniors. I have had approx 6 hours sleep all weekend so my opinions may not be totally accurate.

Williamstown wasted opportunity after opportunity with some very poor disposal and at times some baffling decision making on the wings (is a one / two give off really that difficult a concept?). The players I remembered:

Stack: I hadn't seen him play in the flesh before. I still haven't really, because he barely got near it. Looks lively but if you can't get the ball, it makes it difficult to influence play. Turned the ball over with a terrible handball in the 4th (the crowd of course blamed Cam Wight, unfairly). If Lynch is playing well in the reserves, swap them.

Callan: Probably BOG for mine - he played midfield predominately, made good decisions, ran hard and his disposal was a bit better than most in the blue & gold. Goes in hard, loves body contact. Wasn;t a game-breaker but was very, very good. Could play in the seniors as a run-with player if required.

O'Keefe: Stated each quarter well, only to fade. Clearly possesses a good football brain and generally uses the ball well. Played a little more of an inside game than I expected, having said that he roved a beautiful goal.

Cordy: Just keeps presenting, however his disposal in the first half was awful. At one point a small quick defender just couldn;t wrongfoot him - his agility is that good. Was much better in the second half - he rucked for a decent stretch in the last quarter.

Grant: Started quietly with a goal in the first that he managed to curl around the goalpost when he should have steadied. Just when I was thinking he's a fair way off, he proceeded to play better than I have ever seen him. He presented for multiple leads at times, playing up as a leading HF at times. His defensive pressure was twice as good as last week. Only finished with two, and despite one clanger his disposal was better than most. Jeepers this kid has sticky hands, and he times his runs well. Not ready for senior action, but promising.

Wight: 2nd best on Willy site? That would be generous at best - his disposal wasn't very good before the main break, although he spoiled quite well. In the last qurter he played at CHF and almost stole the game, taking 3 big, big grabs in the F50, kicking 1.1. He turned the ball over late, proving again he has ticker, shows glimpses of talent but lets himself down with mistakes at times. Tackled well I thought.

Skipper - rucked 3 quarters, but had Meyer helping him at times, and Cordy for 1-2 minutes in the 3rd & for a good chunk of the last. Was generally beaten in the tap work but 2nd efforts were good. Tried up forward but couldn't get a sniff which is a shame. Solid game, seems to be a bit of an on field leader. Good around the ground. Both goals were from play, not marks.

Boumann: Surprise packet of the day. This kid is quick. I'd back him in a footrace against almost any midfielder on our list - he just looked quicker than anyone else, let alone a KPP size player. Bodywork was decent, didn't get too much of it especially forward - probably didn't demand it enough. Very good as a backman. He looked more composed and made the right deceisions when he got it. Looked like he belongs in the 1sts not the 2nds.

Reid: Quieter game, but what he did he generaly did well. Then he lifted in the last quarter which made his game better than average. I like this kid, he ran really hard a couple of times, and a Reid tackle sticks.

Addison: Disappointing. Demotingly bad at times, I have never seen a player at any level of football so utterly bamboozled by the flight of a football on such a regular occassion. Even his uncontested marks were double touches. Went to ground thrice when the ball was in the air, to leave his opponent to take an uncontested mark. His inside midfield work & tackling was good, but in the backline at senior level his work overhead would be a liability.

Everitt: Beaten body on body a couple of times, but on his rebound work I would have made room in our bests. His disposal was better than anyone else out there, he went on a couple of long runs where he ran 3/4 of the length of the ground. Bruddy tough too - in the 3rd (?) he got absolutely smashed, got up straight away to keep contesting. Did most of the kick-out work.

Wood - Will be a player, not quite ready for AFL yet but I liked his game. Gotch singled him out for some good play at quarter time. Attacks the ball well and good overhead for his size.

Willy guys were ok - Cloke's disposal was terrible (especially early) but his bodywork was good. I don't rate Johnson's kicking at all. Cam Lockwood tried really hard, Rose was very dangerous up forward. Meyer played everywhere and did ok. Stretton would be regarded as a senior guy at Willy, didn't mind his game although he was out-thought a few times on the wing.
