Re: Williamstown vs Port Melbourne Qualifying Final
Hooper's second half was exceptional. He butchered one in the 1st quarter when he missed under little pressure from 15m out and he could have almost run to the goal line.
I can't believe Johnson wasn't named in the bests, I thought he was the standout player on the ground.
Higgins played like Garry Ablett does. He would have had huge numbers because it seemed like every Willi player was under instructions to give it to Higgins at every opportunity.
I thought Boumann could almost have been in the better players despite barely having a touch. Must have had 10 spoils and his opponents only goal was from a free against Ben Jolley after Boumann had spoiled, then Hooper gave away 50.
Tim Callan was very good until he got smashed by friendly fire. It looked really serious at the time (lots of blood) but he came back on later.
Howard barely touched it, Stack didn't do a lot and Hill looks like he doesn't want to be out there (took a good mark and goaled late in the game). Panos doesn't get it enough. Kicked 2 and gave a Joe the Goose to Stack in the last but wouldn't have had many other touches.

No footage of you yawning this week, Sockeye?

Re: Williamstown vs Port Melbourne Qualifying Final
Got to the game late in the 1st quarter so all opinions are based on the last 3. Kept an eye on a few listed players in particular.
Markovic was great without being spectacular. He even ran hard off the ball at times, doing this to create overlaps and indecision in Port players. This was a facet that I had not noticed before to this regularity. Great spoiler as he tends to spoil to advantage and legally take his direct opponent out or to ground at the same time. Strong boy. A bit one-paced but he ran it all arvo and does read the play very well. No complaints from the Mohawk.
Howard had very quiet day compared to previous viewings. Still showed he has a fair howitzer with that kick of his. Possessions tended to come from switches/turnovers in play rather beating his man. His opponent didn't see much of it either though so was a break-even result at the end of the day.
Callan was solid and productive as he moved well and made good use of the ball. He stifled several attacking raids by Port until cleaned up by Panos(?) on one of his own. Cleaned up again, this time by the medico, and came back on later, The way he then went about his game was still neat and tidy but, it didn't sparkle with the same sort of shine. Love his commitment and courage and this keeps me keen for more of the same.
Hooper was busy all day. Led well but did not get much quality delivery at times, leaving him exposed to overhead contests with much taller opponents (3 rotated on him by my reckoning) or ignored in favour of other options. Like his height, not his fault. His forward defensive efforts were great including a 40 metre, 3 opponent pursuit that led to a throw in. Just would not quit. Had a 3rd quarter where everything just went right. Had me rhyming my head off!! As I didn't see the early blundered goal attempt, saw him do no wrong. Got be close to BOG in 2nd half.
Rose played the role of a mid-sized marking forward and I could hear the various mutterings among some in the crowd about whether he's a certain Johnno replacement or not all afternoon. Ticked a lot of boxes again today. Enough for a call-up? IMO, unlike the Federal Election, enough votes to not have a hung result, but will not know for sure until he is deepended in Red, White and Blue or asked by Mark Latham to shake hands.
So say this independent non-candidate for the Seat of My Pants!

As Highlighted, could we afford a Smokey in the finals, we need someone to provide a bit of grunt in the forward line, I see Addison was there last night and got a few touches but he won't get the 2 or 3 goals needed to help get over the line.
I know posters don't like first timers in finals but he would be a player the Colliewobbles may let get under the radar and if he could created 2 or 3 goals and apply defensive pressure for most of the game it could be worth it.
Thanks DaDruid, good report.
