    Top 20 Whitten Oval Memories

    Just saw on Facebook that later this week people can vote on their Top 20 Memories of the Whitten Oval.

    Thought it would be a good idea to see what WOOFER's who are old enough to remember are able to come up with.

    Off the top of my head & in no particular order are:

    - Kicking 33.15.213 against St.Kilda.

    - Neil Sasche injuring his neck.

    - Keeping Carlton goal less until the final minute.

    - Doug Hawkins returning after injuring his knee.

    - Glenn Coleman snapping the point post.

    - Doug Hawkins breaking Teddy's games record.

    - Teddy's last game.

    - Simon Beasley kicking the winning goal v Collingwood.

    - The final game at the ground.

    First one that springs to mind is the win against Collingwood. Graeme Allan kicks across goal. Beasley runs out from the goalsquare and marks it. Kicks a goal with 10 seconds to go and we win the game. I loved the footage of Jimmy Edmond telling Graeme Allan what a 'silly boy' he was!!

      A highly talented man who was the emergency umpire for that final game when the rugged Dogs backline bashed up Michael Gardiner is a prolific poster on this forum.
      I'm sure it's his No.1 memory.

      Mine is the first game of the Bluey Hampshire regime in 1982. I was lucky enough to get my photo in the paper as a 12 year old patting Bluey on the back after the game with all the other well wishers

        Nearly keeping Carlton goaless one day in the wet (late 80's?), from memory Mark Arceri kicked a consolation goal towards the end to break the drought.

        EDIT - Found it, was rd 11 1991

                KT's 15 Goals has to be stiff not to make the list.
                Albeit in the record breaking game.

                  All great memories and saw all those except the bolded ones as I was living overseas in the 90's.

                  I guess the record breaking Saints game is my all time favorite.

                  Other memories:

                  * Beating Hawthorn in 1985 to clinch second spot on the ladder, great game.

                  * Just Watching the great full forward Kelvin Templeton he was the best FF I have ever seen.

                  * Muddy wet days and seeing Libba absolutely excel in the wet.

                  * The peanut man

                  * All the great characters that stood in the same spot every home match and the funny things they said. (Between the players and umpires race)

                  * Running on to the ground after the match and patting players on the back

                  * Running to be one of a few to make it into the players rooms after the match.

                  * The atmosphere when the ground was jam packed full.

                  * The Can bar

                    Footscray V Sydney Swans in the Dr Edelsten era. Seeing a very glamorous Leanne Edelsten come down from the EJ Whitten stand at quarter time and join the queue at the hot chips kiosk in the forward pocket....wearing leather pants and a fur coat. One of the greatest images I've ever seen at the Whitten Oval. There was a an unfortunate looking bulldogs supporter standing behind her with no teeth. Two ends of the social spectrum captured in one moment.
                    I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.

                      Unfortunately I only saw one game and it was the last, so that takes the cake however to have seen the ground transformed to what it is today has been a great recent highlight.

                        Mine would be rugged up like Eskimo Joe with a thermos of hot tea a BBQ chicken roll made that morning and the burning hot jam donuts from the van.
                        Oh and Simon Beasley bagging 12 goals against Geelong in 1982.
                        Also as mentioned the Collingwood game and that famous kick across goals.
