The 2011 draft and trading thread

With trade week beginning on Monday and some trades already having been done with GWS for mature recruits, this is the thread for all things drafting and trading. Any news, articles, or reliable rumours, please post them here. Also if you have any thoughts on trades we should make feel free to add them.

To start us off, Collingwood has given up their first pick to GWS for the returning Marty Clarke, small forward Jamie Elliot, and a late pick in the 60's.

Also Richmond has swapped their pick 14 for GWS's pick 15 and ex-Richmond premiership player Kevin Morris' son Steven.

Steven Morris gets on an AFL list? Very fond memories of this kid from the 2007 season at the Jets...terrific intensity at the contest. Very happy for him.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

I should have noted, the deals aren't done until trade week starts, but they look likely.

Re: The 2011 draft and trading thread

          Here's what I'd do.

          Let's start with the obvious:

          Retire Hall, Hudson
Ward to GWS > Tier 2 compo pick
          Delist Mulligan

          Elevate Dahlhaus, Panos

          Now my bit.

Reid to GWS > Tier 4 compo pick
Tier 2 compo pick to GWS > pick 7
Hill and pick 57 to WC > pick 45

That gives us picks 7, 17, 39 & 45 (and an end-of-2nd-round compo pick next year)

          Pick 7 - Hoskin-Elliot/Kavanagh/Sumner - someone quick
Pick 17 - Talia/Forster/Paine/Tomlinson/McInness - either a key back or a utility back, we need both
Pick 39 - Frost/Kelly/Bosely/Mihocek - key back or utility back, whatever we don't pick at 17.
          Pick 45 - Kerridge/Webster/Merritt - more pace

I'd be looking for a mature body or two in the rookie draft, especially a ruckman and maybe Mike's mate Kyle Hartigan.

Addison probably should be moved on too, it depends on whether Dalrymple thinks another late pick will help or use the extra pick next year.

            In - Sockeye
            Out - James Fantasy

Pardon my ignorance but how do we get a tier 4 pick?

Good post Sockeye, some things to consider there.

Can GWS use the compensation picks traded to them this year? If we traded the Cal Ward pick to them would they then be entitled to pick 4, directly after their first 3 picks?

By agreeing to lose a second player to GWS

                    No.

Firstly, any compo picks used this year are taken after the first round so no-one will use one this year.

Secondly, the pick remains tied to our finishing position, not the team we are trading it to.

All tier 2 compensation picks are end of first round picks this year. In following years the pick is linked to the finishing position of the team its originally allocated to, so if we traded it to GWS and we finished 18th next year, they would get pick 2 regardless of where GWS finish.

Thanks, so why would GWS trade their pick 7 for our compo pick which is not guaranteed to be below that same pick in any of the next 4 drafts?

Because they get a mountain of picks this year but no additional picks next year, this way they spread their tops picks over an extra year.

I don't see the benefit. This is a club that needs to succeed as soon as possible, why would they want to take a lesser pick, a year later? Or more?

Who's to say the compo pick won't be better than pick 7 next year?

Spreading the number of first year players would be beneficial from a coaching perspective, but more to the point it gives GWS a year to see which players look likely to make it and who don't, and therefore having extra picks in 2012 or 2013 will help them better balance their list.
