Anyway, I was wonder what other posters thought ... With our new coach spending plenty of years under Bomber, and as he is known as a teacher of players, is this going to be our new approach? We've been a lot quieter in trade week this year than we have been in previous years ??
Geelong have only traded for two players since 2004, Ottens and Drum (who never played a game due to injury). Tells you about the mindset at Geelong.

That's exactly what I mean ... Do you think BMac is bringing that philosophy to the Doggies?

So once they built their list they stopped trading for top ups. This sounds about right. I wonder if Thompson would have had the same view if he didn't have Stephen Wells outperforming the league with his player recruitment year after year?

Its an interesting one. First answer is develop your own and trading is the devil, but on the other hand Hawthorn and Collingwood have not been afraid to trade and have experienced the ultimate success.

There is good examples of both approaches. I think the Hawks do it better than most.

Ditto the master traders the Swans. Aside from the Vez/Everrit swap, their record is pretty good over many years.

I guess depends on what he thinks of our list

Was Stephen involved in the 1999 super draft where they picked up some players to form the nucleus of arguably one of the most successful periods in modern Footy? Your right though good recruitment makes a massive difference.

Geelong's startegy not to trade is a direct by-product of a good drafting history. One cannot assume they only followed this theory because it's the right thing to do because they haven't had to make a choice like other teams have.

They also haven't had the cap space to bring in established players. Their excellent drafting has led to them not needing to bring in outside players and as a by-product their ability to hold onto most of those players for market value or less (million dollar offers to Ablett aside) has meant they are at the edge of the salary cap.

It also neglects the fact that 3 very important players (Ottens, Mooney and Harley) were traded to Geelong.

Geelong also got a free ride with multiple father sons picks with very late picks in the draft leaving there top picks for other talent. We have not not been so lucky.

Good point, however, the fact remains they haven't gone for ready made players - which all goes to help when you recruit the way they did.

yes I know that but they were 3 very key players and all KPP. They have drafted extremely well and obviously had a great development program but you can't just write off trading altogether and conveniently ignore that 3 of your most important players are from trades.

I'm a big fan of drafting your own and not trading but you can't just write it off the way Bomber apparently has.
