Think of it this way.
If they load up on Draft picks this year, they end up with a big stack of kids coming off contract at the end of 2013 and will be scrambling to keep them all, especially with the money Scully and Ward are getting.
By spreading them out they pick up their players on a more progressive basis. Instead of having picks 1,2,3,5 and 7 this year and picks 1, 19 and 37 next year, they'll have picks 1,2,3 and 5 this year and 1, 19 and 20 next year.
Its win win.
Don't forget, they can't just take Reid the way they did with Ward. They have to agree to terms with us or he goes into the draft. We've got a bit of leverage. Not much, but its there.
