I don't see the benefit. This is a club that needs to succeed as soon as possible, why would they want to take a lesser pick, a year later? Or more?

Think of it this way.

If they load up on Draft picks this year, they end up with a big stack of kids coming off contract at the end of 2013 and will be scrambling to keep them all, especially with the money Scully and Ward are getting.

By spreading them out they pick up their players on a more progressive basis. Instead of having picks 1,2,3,5 and 7 this year and picks 1, 19 and 37 next year, they'll have picks 1,2,3 and 5 this year and 1, 19 and 20 next year.

Its win win.

Don't forget, they can't just take Reid the way they did with Ward. They have to agree to terms with us or he goes into the draft. We've got a bit of leverage. Not much, but its there.

Adelaide are interested in Lynch of St Kilda so a straight swap for Gunston may be on the cards.

Why would that be good? Is there a chance some are writing off Howard way too quickly or just overrating Gunston?

Both.
I agree with you about Howard. It's dangerous to get rid of a first year player who has shown glimpses of what he could deliver in the future.
Yes he has things to work on ie overhead marking and defensive side.
What he has going for him is a beautiful left foot kick which is rare in our team.
I also like the fact that he thought he had to make a statement in his first game by applying physical pressure when it was his turn.

Here's what I'd do.
That gives us picks 7, 17, 39 & 45 (and an end-of-2nd-round compo pick next year)

Pick 7 - Hoskin-Elliot/Kavanagh/Sumner - someone quick
Pick 17 - Talia/Forster/Paine/Tomlinson/McInness - either a key back or a utility back, we need both
Pick 39 - Frost/Kelly/Bosely/Mihocek - key back or utility back, whatever we don't pick at 17.
Pick 45 - Kerridge/Webster/Merritt - more pace


I'd be looking for a mature body or two in the rookie draft, especially a ruckman and maybe Mike's mate Kyle Hartigan.


Addison probably should be moved on too, it depends on whether Dalrymple thinks another late pick will help or use the extra pick next year.

Sockeye, our most important priority at our club is a key backman (due to Tom Williams not shaping up) and therefore why wouldn't you use pick 7 to get someone suitable.

The Magpies may lose John McCarthy, Alan Toovey and Brent Macaffer to help ease salary cap pressures, with Toovey believed to have asked for a hefty pay rise. Dayne Beams also has been touted as possible trade bait.

There were suggestions yesterday the Magpies had offered three players in a package deal to Greater Western Sydney in a bid to secure boom 17-year-old Jaeger O'Meara, but the Giants resisted the offer.

Port Adelaide has strong interest in Hawthorn ruckman Brent Renouf, who has a year to run on his contract. It's believed the Power has already interviewed Renouf and put him through a medical test but there has been no discussion of compensation.

Fremantle was yesterday working on a deal to satisfy the Brisbane Lions and lure out-of-contract key forward Mitch Clark home.

I think getting a mid who can kick and run is our top priority.

Agreed, we need a bit of everything and that is why we need to get a bit creative.

I wonder if GWS would be interested in a deal that had the Ward compensation pick plus Sam Reid for say pick 11 or 13 and Tim Mohr.
That would give us 2 picks in the first round plus a key defender and give them a strong bodied midfielder plus a decent draft pick in the coming years.

With 2 picks in the first round we could fill a couple of needs with good players

Article in the paper today suggesting Crows may try (or should try) to get Griffen as part of a deal for Gunston. I'm not sure they would have the additional picks or players to get the deal done.

Howard may be another they may enquire about, but unless Howard demands to leave I can't really see it happening.

Agree. It seems to be more based on wishful hope rather than anything else.

Crows have at least 3 players looking for trades, so will be interesting to see how the Gunston trade pans out.

For a club with a lot of cash and resources they lose quite a few players. Does anyone know why this is?

They make bad recruiting strategies and pick interstate players who will want to go home?

Adelaide is a gorgeous place but its pace is quite slower than Melbourne or Sydney, maybe some like the faster pace.
Visa Versa it probably is more because their is only 2 clubs in Adelaide but more in Melbourne so homesickness is spread out more, Melbourne clubs lose one to two players Adelaide lose 3 or 4?
