        Rookie Jong delights Bulldogs

WILLIAMSTOWN smashed the Coburg Tigers by 59 points yesterday but it was the impressive form of Bulldogs rookie Lin Jong that surprised many at Whitten Oval yesterday.

Jong, who is looking to become the first AFL player of Taiwanese-Timorese descent, perhaps became a little closer to the milestone with a best-on-ground performance.

The athletic midfielder, who was selected with pick nine in last year's rookie draft after only starting to play the game at 15, has shown glimpses of promise for most of the season.

Bulldogs development coach Peter German said the club was impressed with Jong's development in his debut season.

''I don't know if he's close to playing senior footy or not, but we're just working with his development in certain areas of his game and he's coming along well,'' German said.

''That's a match committee thing but we're just really pleased with how he's developing.''

In further good news for the Bulldogs, Brodie Moles was among the best in the midfield after fighting back from a 10-month stint on the sidelines with a shoulder injury.

''Brodie's last couple of weeks has probably been of a player who has missed footy for the last (10) months. We weren't asking a lot from him … we're just pleased that he's been able to regain his match fitness,'' German said.

Anthony Anastasio kicked five goals in only his second game for Williamstown after playing in the Foxtel Cup loss last week.

German also praised Tom Hill and James Wall, who played in the ruck against ''three 200-centimetre ruckmen'' for Coburg.

From what I've seen, Jong is above average in Hardness, Marking and Agility. Couple that with his height (190cm) and we've got a real prospect. Amazing the surprises you can get out of the rookie draft these days.

His ascent this year is almost Dahlhaus pace. Starting as a rookie, impressing pre-season, starting in a couple Willy reserves and getting in the bests almost straight away, quick promotion to the seniors and again getting into the bests almost straight away. All this and its still only Round 8!

The main difference is that last year, we were playing poorly and screaming for a Dahlhaus type. This year, we are travelling okay and don't have enough spots as it is for deserving players.

Well said, although I would argue we are in need for a quick rebounding half bank flanker (even if his skills supposedly need some work)

                Seagulls Bounce Back

Williamstown have reinstated their top 4 credentials with a clinical 59-point victory over old foe the Coburg Tigers at Whitten Oval on Sunday.

Coming into the fixture in 5th and on the back of two consecutive defeats to Port Melbourne and South Adelaide in the Foxtel Cup respectively, the Seagulls were desperately in need of some respite and a return to the historic Whitten Oval proved to be the perfect tonic.

From the opening bounce Peter German's men dominated proceedings, kicking 8 goals to 2 in the opening quarter and breaking the game open in the early stages with their speed around the ground and their clean ball-use dissecting their opposition.

The second term began in much the same way for the Seagulls with their pace and spread resulting in the first two goals of the contest. But Coburg would fight-back and threaten to get back in the game, claiming the next three goals and gaining control of the contested ball.

With the Seagull's needing to regain their momentum, the players provided the perfect response with a mouth-watering team goal in transition late in the quarter. The ball was carried from the their opposition 50 forward via a chain of hand passes before debutant Anthony Anastasio finished, establishing a 31-point buffer at half-time.

Buoyed by their wonderful team goal at the latter stages of the first half, Williamstown played some of their most comprehensive footy all year spotting up targets and kicking the first 5 goals of the third quarter. Coburg again, would make some sort of fight-back kicking the next 3 goals of the game and cutting the margin back to 37-points, but a goal from Lin Jong later in the quarter ultimately dampened their efforts and ensured the game was beyond reach.

Going into the final quarter with the a decisive lead, Williamstown refused to get complacent and with expert clearance work and precision passing ensuring they extended their lead and ended the contest with a dominant 22.9. 141 to 12.10 .82 win.

Debutant Anthony Anastasio had a day to remember with a 5-goal performance as a small forward. The little red-head was simply everywhere during the contest, contributing from all parts of the ground with his spark and enthusiasm.

Lin Jong was also hugely impressive, taking the game on with his athleticism and adding two goals of his own, while James Wall played a solid game in the ruck against three specialist ruckmen .

In retrospect, despite Williamstown's abundance of speed in midfield and their precision by foot during the match it was their relentless pressure that ultimately set-up the win. From the early stages, the Seagulls made it their absolute focus to man-up, tackle hard and force-turnovers and their ability to capitalize spoke volumes of the class that remains in the squad.

Williamstown's next competitive fixture comes up against the Bendigo Gold at Windy Hill, in what will be an enticing contest in the ABC TV Game at Windy Hill on Saturday the 2nd of June.

Oh that sucks! I just assumed it would be in Bendigo and had that penciled in.

At least next year Bendigo will play all their home games in Bendigo.
