Tom Temay's the son of Paul who played at Stkilda.
Stkilda fans had a sign "Temay can't play" in the 80's.
Dad would have chalked up some wooden spoons but not 100 games

Aish is Michael nephew. Is an underage player. I have been super impressed with Matt Scharenberg as a tall defender this year. Is also an under age. Grundy is a gun but don't think we need another ruck unless Minson leaves

Re: NAB AFL Under-18 Championships - Ones to Watch

I made the trip down to Geelong today. Plenty of good players for us to consider with our draft picks. It's a shame that there was a few fancied players missing today.

There was some discussions about if Melbourne will get a bargain with young Viney. If they finish bottom 3 or 4 it's very reliant that one of the teams ahead of them making an offer to take him to try and force the Dees to use their first pick.

The problem for those teams is if they nominate Viney and then Melbourne counters that bid the player they end up selecting is then regarded as someone they really weren't that keen on or something of a consolation prize. That isn't ideal for an early pick and a bit of a nightmare when trying to talk him up like clubs do with early picks. It's a bit hard for them to sell the merits of one player when in reality they struck out on Viney.
If Melbourne finish bottom 3 or 4 the speculation is that they then have a great chance of getting Viney in the 2nd round.

I'd happily use one of two first rounders on Dayle Gartlett

I know it's probably ducks and drakes, but Sheeds has said that GWS would happily bid their first pick for Viney, and GWS will almost certainly not be finishing ahead of the Dees this season. If this happens, it would be a terrific result for us if Melbourne is forced to use their very first pick on Viney, as one extra top-echelon player will slip through the cracks to our first pick.

I guess it's all reliant on a club willing to nominate Viney as the 1st or 2nd pick but then being prepared of selling the value of the player they end up drafting. Personally I wouldn't do it. Whoever the club ends up drafting becomes the consolation prize which is a PR nightmare.

I guess so. Lots of run and a bit of dazzle but there are a few very good players that I would also be hoping we look hard at.

This would be a great year to have pick 10.

If we finished a spot below Melbourne I would be very reluctant to nominate him and risk Melbourne not take him. In horseracing parlance, prefer others.

I'm sorry but don't understand this.

If GWS or Gold Coast nominate Viney or Joe Daniher for that matter, they ensure that the father/son club take the player and leave another in the mix for everybody including their next round.

The only downside could be that they are left with the father/son prospect. This would only be an issue if the player chosen (i.e. Viney or Daniher) is not worth the pick they use.

If they bid pick 1 on Viney and Melbourne take him with pick 3, GWS then use pick 1 on the next choice, who is likely to be top notch anyway and the player they would choose anyway if they decided that Viney is off limits.

The pressure of No 1 then sits more with Viney than the actual No 1 taken on draft day.

I read it that GVG thinks it's debateable whether Viney is actually a top 3 pick rather than a mid-to-late first rounder. If GWS or GC want to try to force Melbourne's hand to take him at pick 3 (based on current ladder position), Melbourne may decide that he isn't acutally worth pick 3 and they would only give up an early 2nd round for him, and GWS or GC end up having to use pick 1 or 2 for a player that is probably only rated as a mid-to-late first rounder.

Justifying having reached for a player that wasn't rated highly enough by his potential father-son club could be the challenge.

                            That I understand.
I guess it really comes down to whether he is really a top 3 pick. If GWS or GC rate him they need to bid, BUT he does need to be worth it.

The variable is GC has Scotty Clayton- The value of prospective early first round picks could vary wildly from club to club.

Viney looks too well developed for Clayton. Surely he would be looking for someone about 194 cm who can run and kick but weighs less than 70 kg
