Re: NAB AFL Under-18 Championships - Ones to Watch
Scenario 1
Lets say GWS and GC have the 1st and 2nd picks of the draft and Melbourne has the 3rd.
During the father son bidding process if GWS nominates Viney with their 1st pick (#1 in the draft) then Melbourne has a choice of using pick 3 to acquire Viney and they will do that if they have to. Vinet is now theiors for #3.
When it comes time for the National draft, the player GWS selects isn't really the number one pick of the draft any more in fact he becomes the default number one pick.
I just don't think clubs would be too happy to do that. They want to sell the fact to their members they have the player they rated as the best in the land.
Scenario 2 is around that if GWS and GC decide they just want the best 2 best players and don't want to make a bid for Viney then Melbourne can get him in the 2nd round.
Now I don't think this is an issue for some later picks (5 to 7) if Melbourne finish 6th or 7th but I think there is some pressure on the clubs with the very early picks to decide if they want to make Melbourne pay a high price more than if they want to sell the merits of the players they draft.
