Re: Williamstown v Werribee Round 3
I think you're 1 year ahead - Dalrymple's shocker was in 2009 and his draft hauls have gotten progressively better since then.
Smith vs Crozier will always be an interesting one because of their significant differences as players. Both are terrific prospects but each have very different skill sets."Look at me mate. Look at me. I'm flyin'"Comment

Howard, Tutt, Markovic and Picken upgrade still on our list

Can you remind me why Smith is seen (at least by you) as a 'terrific' prospect?
All I see is a super competitive kid who would crawl over hot coals to win the ball... but he is slow and can't kick.Comment

Re: Williamstown v Werribee Round 3
That's a bit of a misleading way of listing it
Our actual selections were;
2009
Howard, Tutt, Markovic, Thorne, Moles (rookie), Hooper (rookie), Panos (rookie), Prato (rookie), Rose (rookie)
2010
Wallis (fs), Libba (fs), Schofield, Skinner, Hill, Dahlhaus (rookie), JJ (rookie), Barlow (rookie)
2009 was an unmitigated disaster, it was packed full of "I'm the smartest man in the room" type selections. Markovic is average depth and Tutt may still make it, but the rest are either gone or will probably be gone at season's end.
2010 was a massive improvement obviously helped by the 2 F&S selections but we also got some quality from the rookie drafts. There was some more "clever" selection like Skinner but I doubt we'll see any more of the occur with BMac in charge.Western Bulldogs: We exist to win premiershipsComment

Re: Williamstown v Werribee Round 3
Clay Smith is ahead of Dalrymple's first go at a first rounder (Howard) and way in front of most of Clayton's picks.
Disagree with the slowness aspect, and his kicking has improved markedly over the pre-season.
His poor kicking previously was due to possibly the ugliest ball dropping action seen on a football field; this is getting better.
In terms of footskills some players improve by only a bare margin (Sam Power's accurate but floaty kicks that gave opponents time to spoil), some improve a huge amount (Jobe Watson, arguably Cross in the past 2 years).Western Bulldogs: 2016 PremiersComment

Re: Williamstown v Werribee Round 3
That word 'competitive'. I think he will have a very good AFL career purely because he is such a competitive beast. We're only seeing intermittent bursts from him here and there, but there aren't many other 2nd year inside mids who are impacting matches on a more consistent basis (Libba did last year as a 2nd year player, but he is an inside ball winning freak with brilliant hands in traffic). I think Smith has the right tools and the right attitude and competitive hunger to have a fine career.
His pace doesn't worry me - I think he covers the ground more than adequately enough in a Jobe Watson kind of way. But the kicking does remain a big concern for me. I would get him the hell away from the wing or half-back like he's played there 1-2 times this season. I can see him effectively taking over from Boyd when he retires."Look at me mate. Look at me. Re: Williamstown v Werribee Round 3
Gee there's a few mids around who aren't to quick. Still think its to early to tell, but for a second year player straight in the mid he 's doing okay.
Has to improve his kicking,granted.Comment

I think a few of the recruiting officer's are inflicted with that disease.

Re: Williamstown v Werribee Round 3
No its not, they are the players left on our list from those years. No point listing those that are gone.
I can go though every team and show you the same stats, ie those that make it and those that don't. The don't will be always larger. The good teams have good list management, which we have never had.FFC: Established 1883

Re: Williamstown v Werribee Round 3
Yes it is. You posted the players that were upgraded from the rookie list that year, it's entirely misleading. What year a player gets upgraded to the senior list is irrelevant to the discussion, it's about what draft they were identified in and recruited to the club.No its not, they are the players left on our list from those years. Re: Williamstown v Werribee Round 3
It makes the 2010 draft look significantly better though. We've got 3 qualities players plus another promising player in JJ. If we got that out of every draft we would be very well placed. 2011 looks pretty good too with Smith, Talia, and Roberts looking like becoming good players. Plus Dickson as a mature pick and Pearce and Jong also being a chance.
We really have to hope we nailed 2012. Stringer and McRae look quality, we just have to hope at least two of Hrovat, Hunter, and Pruden become good players. As well as one of Stevens and Young.
2009 was just such a let down, especially after Clayton had failed so badly in the 5-6 years prior. Why we went with the approach we did I will never understand.Western Bulldogs: We exist to win premiershipsComment

Re: Williamstown v Werribee Round 3
Leading up to the 2009 draft I think the club had a false sense of where the game was going, but more importantly what it thought it took to rejuvenate the list appropriately to maintain competitiveness. Not a lot of cool or reasonable heads at the place during that period, but a lot of self interested and short sighted people instead.
Dalrymple in his first year would have been under a lot of pressure to find some players to replace a glaring need that was becoming evident with Gilbee, Eagleton and Akermanis declining (Tutt and Howard), as well as find a player capable of kicking a goal or two (Thorne). I appreciate Greystache's 'smartest man in the room' in light of that, though I find it pretty hard to accept the actions of those guiding the process. Pretty irresponsible for mine.
I'm running out of hope for Howard (who has actually shown some patches of decent form at the top level), though I still think Tutt has the tools to make it with a clear run without injury.
As we're seeing now, Dalrymple with some clear direction of what's required to rebuild and the support to make the appropriate decisions is looking like he's capable of putting our list together.
Schofield is still one that disappoints me from 2010. I thought he showed some calmness with the ball and looked like he could have turned himself into a clever footballer.TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.Comment

Re: Williamstown v Werribee Round 3
It seems like every draft is a raging success the year after it happens. Talia might be the worst kick on an AFL list, for all his athleticism he can't be a good AFL player until this becomes acceptable.
Pearce hasn't shown any more than your average recent draft pick in a bottom side. The jury's out, Roberts has shown less than Pearce and is very slow.
Jong was worth a rookie spot, especially given the demographic out West, but he won't make it, not even a chance.
In Clayton's last year with us he picked up Roughead and Jones. You'd have to say two hits there with mid range picks.
2007 - Still on AFL lists - Grant, Ward, Wood, Reid. Not - Boumann (only just delisted), O'Keefe (was a knob).
2006 - AFL listed - Everitt, Hill. Not - Stack, Lynch, O'Shea (all late picks).
2005 - AFL - Higgins, Addison. Not - Baird, Monty (retired), West.
2004 - AFL - Griffen, Williams. Not - McCormack, Wells, Tiller.
2003 - AFL - Cooney, Ray. Not - Thompson.
2002 - AFL - Minson. Not - Walsh, Faulkner, Murphy, Bassett, Wight.
I see 2002 as a waste, but the other years I'd be more inclined to take than leave.
Too early to tell.
Agree. I think he has some zip about him, my main issue is with his kicking/general ball control.
Agreed, I really liked Schofield, anyone have a clue where he is now?'And the Western suburbs erupt!'Comment
