I like Rohan Smith as I think he has no ambition to coach.Really has to be someone who has the AFL team in their heart as the win/loss ratio is unimportant.

Little off the way this thread is trending but it is going to be absolutely critical that we build a very solid base of VFL footballers who are willing to play football in a manor that will be of benefit for the entire club. The seconds rightly so will be primarily used as a platform for developement but it is crucial that they are competitive.

We are likely to need 20+ VFL listed players, many of which I'd hope have had previous AFL experience or have been part of a successful VFL/SANFL/WAFL program. For us to become a very strong club at AFL level we simply have to get this right.

        Great point Slim.

I wonder how we will entice them. $$ is the obvious answer, but how much can we pay?

It will have to be smart, VFL players don't earn a great deal but a possible drawing card will be the fact they're under the direct eye of AFL coaches.

I'd look at trying to persuade Crossy to stay on in a playing/line coach like capacity working for the footy club, you'd also assume Prismall will play for our VFL team. So this is where it will be important to build a list of players who either a)want to impress to get another shot at afl level b) are proven state league performers, c) Potetional future draft picks from TAC cup level and may need some time to develop.

Geelong have a very good team in place built around some senior players with ex-afl experience and a very good coach.

You would assume we'd look to form strong ties with the WRFL, much like the Geelong side have done with their local league, no?

Not so sure it would be the simple as we're not the only VFL team based in the West. Geelong had the luxury of a big feeder area.

The club has already sat down with the Football Op's GM of the WRFL a couple of times.

Not surprised at all by that. Not sure how it would work though, movement between clubs and areas are ridiculous at the moment particularly with the amount of blokes chasing coin. We need to find a way of attracting the Myles Sewell, Ben Duscher types to the club.

Macca is presenting to the clubs personally fairly soon. Hopefully that helps attract some of the good players to align themselves with us. As I understand it, we would need 6-8 from the WRFL.

Why do we have to attract these types to the club? They'll take up engine room spots and dollars when we need this team to develop our organic gameplan.

Prefer near miss kids from recent drafts and WRFL affiliations (if possible) to make up the bulk of the excess spots.

Do you think players will play for free? As I said VFL players don't earn much and can honestly earn more playing in some of the local leagues. My point is we need good honest footballers to help further develop the players that are on the list. Those names I threw up are an example. Some bigger bodies to protect and help out our kids will be a benefit wouldn't you think?

Look at what Geelong has achieved at VFL level compared to Essendon or Collingwood. We have to get this right and I'd rather us have a good proven VFL footballer as back up then a bloke plucked from the WRFL.

Geelong, Collingwood and Essendon have vast sums of money to throw at their VFL side. We don't, hence the reason I think the option of those that missed recent drafts and talented WRFL players should make up the bulk of the residual spots.

Agree that players won't play for free, but to have the opportunity to play directly under the eyes of of an AFL club(s) they'd likely play for next to nothing to have a chance at their dream.

There's going to be hardened bodies in each week anyway e.g our slurplus experienced 24 - 30 on the list (Lower, Wood types)

This side's aim should be to train and develop our players in the senior gameplan, not to contest for premierships at VFL level.

Think you're reading what I am saying wrong. I haven't once said that we should build towards a VFL premiership. I have said we must get the appropriate players to help develop our young developing footballers. Please refer to my earlier post because you are missing my point.

AFL list is bout 40, so how many extras do we need ? Is 10 more non AFL Players enough?

Geelong, Essendon and Collingwood have around the 20 mark on their VFL lists
