How does a large recruiting team mean they able to trade extremely well?
More of an In Bruges guy?

Mav Weller being courted by the Dons (they'd court a corpse) and two other clubs apparently.

I guess their analysis and resources available help them to target the type of players they want, then they must also have good negotiation skills.

I think it's their negotiation skills that really stand out plus their player development is good.
The always seem to want boys that can transition quickly to senior football. They often like drafting players from SA who have already had a taste of senior football.

The trade offered up by me for instance, pick four and Liberatore to get pick one and pick 20 is perfectly reasonable to get the job done.

Right now I wouldn't do it, but if our list structure was different I'd consider it. As good as Liberatore is, his output is easier to account for than the output of fiercely competitive and competent KPF's.

There's a reason why very talented, very strong and very competitive KPF's are coveted. We can look at stats, we can look at any measure we like to throw at it across any team that is either well coached or poorly coached, but a competitive game strategy is a much less complex and easier strategy to execute if you have a reliable tall and heavy forward target (or more than one).

If you look back to our 2008-2010 period, you'd have to acknowledge we had a playing group being extremely disciplined and playing to an extremely complex ball movement strategy. The only reason why our strategy was so complex, was because our forward line lacked one KPF of reasonable repute, and another to take the heat off when the heat was turned up.

Ultimately our midfield wasn't hard and clean enough to execute the strategy, and we didn't feed our undersized forward line with the volume of opportunities needed to be competitive in finals against top four sides. But, would the pressure on our midfield to perform at such a high level have been alleviated if we had a decent key forward to simplify the strategy in the first place?

If we had such a forward or forwards, would we be able to take some cattle out of our midfield, but still get the job done?
It wasn't only our lack of a KPF during 2008-2010, but just as significant was our lack of finishing skills apart perhaps Gilbee being the exception. Our current list similarly doesn't boast good disposal. This will be Macca's biggest test in turning our strong attack on the ball, into positive outcomes.Hawthorn with 9 left footers in its line up are experts in the manner it has been so precise in using the ball to its team's advantage. We still have too many players who are poor finishers. To become a serious final 8 contenderIMO it is our vast improvement in our skill level that will make us truly competitive.

I agree with you, that our lack of class finishers hurt us during that time. What I was getting at was our strategy meant we were dependent on capitalising on hard earned and ultimately few opportunities to score.

Apart from bringing Smith and Talia onto the list, it looks like the club has identified that solid ball use is a must for early draftees. That makes me happy.

There is still speculation that we should get Sam Darley before the end of the trade period.

I don't think he is in the Giants plans. Probably for a pick they won't use.

GWS have a very tight list management position, hence trading out Edwards and Aylett yesterday. Wouldn't be surprised if they just let Darley go for a nominal pick. The only issue for us is that assuming we trade out pick 26, we're probably going to have a live pick deep in the draft and we don't really want to drop further back down the order.

Couldn't it be as simple as a delisted free agent if GWS aren't wanting to keep him.
