Really? The ads for his new show are very tacky and show no imagination at all.

        Re: Comedians

Plenty of great Aussie comedians getting around these days, however one thing that perplexes me is how the hell Dave Hughes could be considered one of Australias best comedians. Personally I get more laughs out watching Lisa Wilkinson on the Today show.

Conversely, I have seen Dave O'Neil at the Comedy Festival one year and pissed myself laughing all night.

What are people's thoughts on musical comedians (ie. Tripod, Demitri Martin, David O'Doherty)?

I find that comedy songs annoy me and are usually lame due to rhyming, predictable punchlines and repitive weak joke choruses, but find that comedians who use music as a means to link together small snippets of observations and jokes are very funny (see Demitri Martin).

For this reason i find Tripod annoying and lame, and David O'Doherty funny*

*Disclaimer. I am basing this upon their performances on the comedy gala, I have not seen their material beyond that.
I should leave it alone but you're not right

I don't know a great deal about those comedians, but....

My sister has a far superior itunes to mine, so as a result she loads random stuff onto my ipod from time to time. She recently loaded Flight of the Conchords. Having not ever really heard their stuff before and not seen the TV series, I was blown away by how hilarious they are! My favourite song is currently "Business Time", with an honourable mention to "The Misunderstanding". Just great silly humour wrapped up in song.

I love also the Doug Anthony All Stars, but have only discovered them in the past few years (I think I would have been in primary school when they were at their prime, so a tiny bit young for the jokes!). Looking at their old clips on youtube, the clothes and the hairstyles are amazing !

I just bought tickets to see Barry Morgan's World of Organs at the Comedy Festival. Looking forward to seeing Barry... and his organ.

I've seen both Tripod and David O'Doherty live.
D'OD is about 3894387493874364873 times funnier. I don't know why, he just is. Maybe cause he's Irish. I love Irish people (i.e Jason Byrne).

                  Re: Comedians

When it comes to comedians, my tastes are like my religion, eclectic.

I grew up in a home where Dick Emery, The Two Ronnies, Benny Hill and Dave Allen (still one of my all time favs) ruled the roost. British comedians still dominate my selections when it comes to making me laugh but below is a list of those who have never failed to make me chuckle.

                  - Dylan Moran (Black Books fame) is up there in my mind, last seen him a couple of years ago at Hamer Hall. Woke up sore next day from cackling so hard.
                  - Jimmy Carr is very, very funny. Apeals to the devil that resides within me.
                  - Alexei Sayle is a very accomplished standup comedian who is probably known by most for his roles in The Young Ones.
                  - Monty Python, nothing further needs adding as to why.
                  - Stephen Fry, intelligent humour for the intelligensia, love his new show, QI.

Despite being musical comedy, Flight of the Chonchords are very good. I love how clever their songs are in terms of mimicking styles and working jokes into them.

I do find however their tv show is a lot less funny. The manager is brialliant, but the rest of it isn't that great and I find the songs much funnier when they aren't put in context within an episode, and are just left to be themselves. Highlights include "Fashion is Danger", "Hurt Feelings", "I'm not Crying", "If You're Into It" and "We're Both in Love with a sexy lady" (particularly the Barbara/Brabara bit).

I enjoy the Young Ones, but for me Alexei Sayle and Mike are really lame characters that add nothing. This may be because I only saw it a few years ago and thus it's very out of date, but nevertheless I Rik is clearly the funniest, with Vivian and Neil both having their fair share of moments.

I was borderline obsessed with DAAS between the ages of 15-18. In their prime they were very good, although i'm not sure it stands up that well now. Got to see them live once.

I Loved Alexei and used to watch Alexei Sayle's "Stuff" religiously as I did with "A Bit Of Fry and Laurie" which is still one of the better sketch comedies ever made.

The reason Mike is in the Young Ones is they wanted a 'proper' actor to balance out the fact they had three comedians in the cast with no real acting experience. I agree that he's the weakest character (by far) but I can understand the thinking behind his casting.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

New? It's into it's eigth (or maybe even ninth) season. I agree it's a sensational show though. I've downloaded and watched every episode of each season.

Last time I came across the actor who played Mike, he was playing a Sontaran leader in Doctor Who. Not that many roles around for a height-challenged actor...

Not so sure about that, everybody needs vertically challenged actors, even though "Nobody ever says Fatumpsh!"

I thought the balance was right for the Young Ones. Alexi Sayle played various members of a dodgy Rusian family including the landord.
