Despite being musical comedy, Flight of the Chonchords are very good. I love how clever their songs are in terms of mimicking styles and working jokes into them.
I do find however their tv show is a lot less funny. The manager is brialliant, but the rest of it isn't that great and I find the songs much funnier when they aren't put in context within an episode, and are just left to be themselves. Highlights include "Fashion is Danger", "Hurt Feelings", "I'm not Crying", "If You're Into It" and "We're Both in Love with a sexy lady" (particularly the Barbara/Brabara bit).
I enjoy the Young Ones, but for me Alexei Sayle and Mike are really lame characters that add nothing. This may be because I only saw it a few years ago and thus it's very out of date, but nevertheless I Rik is clearly the funniest, with Vivian and Neil both having their fair share of moments.

The reason Mike is in the Young Ones is they wanted a 'proper' actor to balance out the fact they had three comedians in the cast with no real acting experience. I agree that he's the weakest character (by far) but I can understand the thinking behind his casting.
Loved Mike, very funny character. And Alexei Sayle is great too. Definitely wouldn't have been as good without either one of them.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.
