I hope Maddinson gets dropped from the final team.

So is this Hilton Cartwright our next attempt at an all rounder?

You prefer Hilton Cartwright who is averaging 37 with the bat and 75 with the ball in shield this season?

Maddinson should never have been picked but Cartwright is a strange selection and shows the selectors desperation for an all-rounder.

What I'd prefer is another new set of selectors. It's beyond a joke.

Flattering calling him an all rounder with 15 first class wickets from 16 matches. I rate his batting but he's nothing more than a change bowler

I remember once watching the Ch9 commentary of an Ashes test a few years back. I think it was Mark Taylor who was explaining the test numbers on players shirts and why England's number was so much more higher, several hundred more I think it was. Taylor in summary said the baggy green is treated with far more respect by Australian selectors who made you earn your spot, and Australia doesn't throw them around to undeserving players. It's an elite group of players and not wide open to throwing caps around.

                  1. We'd be catching England up.
                  2. I'd love to hear Taylor explain his real thoughts, and then his CA bullshit for a giggle.

Cartwright is Chappell's captains pick. It's almost as though the selectors are deliberately trumping up a left-field selection for the hell of it (Waugh's is Maddinson) when there are literally a dozen better credentialed candidates.

Speaking of England, we are now following their lead in selecting anyone from the Commonwealth - we could have a Zimbo, a Paki and a Pom in the next test team.

Another last innings of a test, another ineffectual Nathan Lyon performance. Lucky to have 2 wickets given Khan threw his away. Is that why Steve Smith couldn't bowl himself as a change up?

So we really want an ((medium) pace) all-rounder....if you can't pick Mitch Marsh, surely Faulkner was next.

At least they got Renshaw & Handscomb right.

Cartwright is more of a batting all-rounder than the likes of Faulkner and M. Marsh - has a first-class batting average of 44. In light of our troubles with the middle order of late, I can sort of see the sense of picking a no.6 with stronger batting than bowling credentials, but it is also a very conservative strategy - 20 wickets wins matches.

I tend to agree but he shouldn't really be regarded as an all-rounder except in the limited over forms of the games where the scope for the all-rounder title is broader.

In the longer forms of the game he's a batsman who's a handy bowler.

Maddinson deserves an Ayce Cordy run at it. Cartright has next to zero chance of picking up a wicket although he may be in the team as a chop out to our primary bowling line up.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

Steve Waugh was an all rounder when he first came into the test team.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.
