I am not worried too much about calling in Cartright. Maddinson probably deserves another test match at 6, but in some ways I think his game is flawed and that at best he will flatter to deceive - long famine's followed by Gourmet feasts.....

Looking ahead to India, if the English performance has taught one thing its that a 5th bowler is a priority - you need to get 20 wickets to win a test match and in trying conditions relying on 4 guys is hard and will take its toll over the tour.

Smith as well, actually probably regarded more as a bowler.

And was a very good bowler too. It's a shame back injuries prevented him bowling later in his career.

He took 5 for in the third innings of his second test too I reckon. Ran through the poms whole they went for quick runs looking for a declaration but Waugh kept them out in the middle with a long spell.

5/63 rings a bell. That was probably what did his back in.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Pretty good memory there Twodogs - he took 5/69 against the Poms in the third innings, but it was his 10th test.

The back thing was probably genetic - didn't Mark have to switch from medium pace to off spin because of his back?

Was it Steve Waugh or Blewett that could hit high 130's when they bent their backs? Australia always had handy 3rd string seamers in the 90's and 00's

Maybe Blewett but that seems way too sharp to me. High 120s maybe.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

True. Was initially batting at 8 and 9 in the batting order. As was Shane Watson when he first made the Test team.

Cam White's 4 tests in India were as a number 8 batsman and spin bowler

People forget that White was a genuine spinner early in first class cricket. He has 200 first class wickets @40. His Shield avergae is better than Nathan Lyon's

Back in the day White and Smith were talked up as 'The Next Warne'. Ian Chappell wrote a whole article about how good a spinner Smith could be (and he's a decent batsman too).

Ricky Ponting could let 'em rip too but I don't think we are thinking of any of those three. It's driving me mad trying to think who it was though. Langer, no. Martyn, um, no. Lehmann, definitely not. Bevyn, leggie. Katich, nup. What about Tom Moody? He was big and played a fair bit of test cricket and bowled a bit. Could he whip it up to the 130s?

Reckon it might have been Blewey - he took a bag of 5 at Hobart once and there was a fair sprinkling of short stuff that hurried onto the batsmen and surprised them.

It must have been, I can't think of who else it would be. 130s was around McGrath's stock speed it's not slow,

Apparently there is no change to the line-up. It will be interesting to see how the bowlers handle the warm conditions.
