Re: Ashes 5th Test: Thursday July 27-Monday 31, The Oval

My thoughts are aligned with those above, after one of the more arduous touring spells in recent Australian test history, this feels like the minimum acceptable result that gives us a pass. We fought it out in India, the WTC is a big tick and we retained the urn, but this was the side that should have won on English soil.

This feels like the zenith of this Australian cycle for me - this was the legacy tour. Warner should go now (and if the selectors have any integrity, they'll make the decision for him) but over the course of 24 months we'll see most of Smith, Khawaja, Hazlewood, Starc and Lyon start to exit the international scene. It might not be the Waugh side of 01 or the Ponting side of 06, but collectively, that is a raft of cricketers with excellent records that we'll need to replace. I think we're going to see one of the biggest rejuvenative periods since the 06-08 period. And for the first time in a long time, spin bowling depth might be our most bankable area - we should be concerned about what our batting and fast bowling prospects aged in that 25-29 range.

I think what makes it more hollow is that if we're honest, we're bloody lucky to escape with 2-2. England have dominated these final three tests and I agree, they're not close to us talent wise. This was the series for Marnus, Head, Carey and Cummins to grab hold of and dominate - they'll all walk away feeling like England had their number.

But they managed to share the spoils of a ripping series, which could have been 4-0 either way.

We might hate the Poms but we will miss them when the turgid home test series against Pakistan and the Windies are on this summer. Bazball is a lame-ass term but they are undoubtedly a great team to watch and have been ever since McCullum and Stokes took over.

I take my hat off to the ultimate heel in Broad. He finishes test cricket still at the top of his game at 36yo. It has been a stellar career, and Ashes cricket will be a little duller without him.
Their conditions, their home ground. Without your more in depth analysis, I think England was the better team overall in that it avoided batting collapses, frankly bowled better than Cummins-Starc-Hazlewood and probably won the PR tussle. What started out as an exciting series fell away to the extent that we welcomed rain in the last 2 games.

I think both sides' fielding had a lot to do with the first two results as well. England's awful catching gave us a huge start - particularly at Edgbaston - and when they cleaned that up in the final three tests our batters struggled to build match-winning scores.

Well spotted. I hadn't thought of that. England's fielding was really good in the Oval Test

I reckon the series never stopped being exciting and gripping. The ebbs and flows were constant throughout all 5 tests, and things changed sharply in-session, let alone in game and in series.

When all 4 live results are decided by 2-3 tail-end wickets or sub-50 runs, that is a cracking series.

Absolutely! This from Andy Zaltzman on Twitter: In all 343 men’s Ashes Tests played before this series, there had been only 25 matches won by margins of under 50 runs or by three or fewer wickets

Re: Ashes 5th Test: Thursday July 27-Monday 31, The Oval

Amongst the best years of my life were the 2 spent in the Old Dart. A chalkie back then and the only Australian in both the Staff Room and the Old Boys Cricket Club rooms, I copped a bit, it was in the Lillee-Thompson era. Post Ashes, whenever an English Cricket, Soccer or Rugby team had a victory, I would proclaim the victory using the pronoun, "we", howls of derision and mirth.

On Sunday night, I received a 'phone call from a mate, of Indian birth and by education in London. We go to the Melbourne Test together, we particularly love the Aus-India Tests. He's in London, at the moment, with the inlaws. I asked him if he was going to the Oval 5th Test. No, says Kulwinder, not when we are losing.

What goes around, comes around. Cricket's great.

I don't know if England won the PR game. I mean possibly in the UK they did, but they're in all sorts over there and have completely lost the plot.
                      TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.
