Re: Ashes 5th Test: Thursday July 27-Monday 31, The Oval

5/30 as part of 7/70 - with just 124 to get with 7 wickets.

FMD. Those leaked runs to tail hurt all series. Shame no one ever observed it happening. Not to mention dropped catches.

Why can’t any sporting team I have interest in just win from winnable positions.

Calling it a good series but I’m a bit disappointed. Feels like a series loss as Australia performed below expectations in all aspects .

Some very good cricket to watch but I don't think many of our boys came out of this with their reputation enhanced.

Like JanLorMill said, we performed below expectations.

Lemmon made the case for Inglis the other day.
Boland looks like he’s an Australian pitches only bowler
                  Cummins got overworked
Fielders dropped way too many catches
                  Bowlers leaked runs
Warner is cooked - but doubt the selectors will dent him his retirement wish
                  Marnus looked very shaky
Steve Smith is not the player
Green didn’t leave an impression on me
                  Shot selection was generally poor
I’m surprised Neser didn’t get a run too

We should’ve won. But alas we take the tie and retain it.

We have some work to do replacing Lyon, Warner & Smith. Hope Green becomes the player we think he will be and make calls on others. It doesn’t feel like we have a ruthless edge anymore. There’s plenty of natural ability though, just not a ruthless outfit.

Re: Ashes 5th Test: Thursday July 27-Monday 31, The Oval

Both teams should feel like they should have won the series.
As BT pointed out we had a number of challenges that we didn't really overcome.
Internally I hope our cricket board aren't satisfied with how we played. They can say what they like to the media but should line up McDonald and ask the question on why a large squad couldn't get the job done.

Marnus needs to get hungrier for runs. Over the series he didn't appear to me to have batted in the best interest of the team.
Smith is still a great batsman but his days of being one of the truly greats is behind him.
Warner benefited by not having enough competition for his spot and the selectors clearly don't have faith in Harris.
                    Khawaja was very solid.
Green came up short with both bat and ball.
History would say Marsh isn't quite the answer or won't stay fit.
                    Carey isn't anything special

Starc, Cummins and Hazlewood are still our strike bowlers but didn't dominate.
                    Losing Lyon didn't help.
Boland was just short of the mark and we didn't buy into the horses for courses qualities of Neser.
                    Murphy probably learned a lot.

Re: Ashes 5th Test: Thursday July 27-Monday 31, The Oval

You could argue the rain interruptions didn't help our continuity in the 2nd innings but that would be a lie given how often our batters collapse after making starts.

We retain the ashes but it doesn't feel like we played much good cricket outside the first test. Certainly looked like there was fatigue amongst the group but it's no excuse.

Batters not advancing on their starts and bowlers leaking easy runs to tailenders is not good enough. It just looked lazy and careless at times. An entertaining series nonetheless but not much hope on the horizon with an aging core. It's an interesting time for test cricket.

My biggest disappointment was the way we bowled to the tail end in each of the tests and let them get so many runs at the end of their innings. Yes batting was not consistent, although Ussi was the highest scorer for the series.

England whinging for the whole series was also funny but excruciating.

Overall, England was the better team. Perhaps we benefitted, winning the first 2, by England's adjustment to bazball.

The next series is against the West Indies . That will hide a lot of cracks in this team.
One of the good things to come out of the series is Todd Murphy will be good.

On talent and depth, this should have been a comfortable test series win for Australia. England have holes everywhere - streaky openers, no clear 1st drop, no 5 with a very questionable technique, all rounder who could only bat, keeper who couldn't keep, a spinner who was never a great bowler anyway and who came out of retirement and was injured most of the series, 40yo opening bowler who father time has caught up with. But they managed to share the spoils of a ripping series, which could have been 4-0 either way.

We might hate the Poms but we will miss them when the turgid home test series against Pakistan and the Windies are on this summer. Bazball is a lame-ass term but they are undoubtedly a great team to watch and have been ever since McCullum and Stokes took over.

I take my hat off to the ultimate heel in Broad. He finishes test cricket still at the top of his game at 36yo. It has been a stellar career, and Ashes cricket will be a little duller without him.

The "new" ball controversy is downright a debacle. How was that allowed to happen?
