I don't think White would have been the answer for Australia but can see where Lantern is coming from. White's last 2 tests were 44, DNB, 46 and 26*. Those last 2 were Australia's 3rd best score for the innings and 2nd best score for the innings. Hardly form to drop a person.

I think he was selected in these tests as a spinner which he is clearly not.

And when batted at number 8 he looked like a number 8.

you are correct SS he was selected as a spinner which in itself was completely ridiculous. I do recall them saying that he was a spinning all rounder though.

At one stage in his career he was regarded a bowling all-rounder but his batting came along quicker than his bowling. In reality he was always a batting all-rounder but his batting often came up a bit short when it counted. At best White might have been able to hold down the number 6 spot in the batting line-up but I doubt he could have moved up the order. He just hasn't taken than next step we hoped he would.

Could it have been a case of being a young captain and not having enough time to work on his batting and bowling.
He did a mighty job as captain for the Vic's but I have often thought it may have been detriment to his own game.

It's a good point you make but I also wonder if we just overrated him.

Like I said i don't think he was the answer but the part about being number 6 and not moving up the order, how is that any different to Clarke?

Another great batting display by Haddin today.
Lets hope he has a better crack with the gloves.
Don't imagine he will be droppped for the last test, but do hope this will be his last series.

Wade just keeps performing with bat and gloves.

He was great the other night and I can't see the selectors going past him in the one dayers.
IMO it will also be Haddins last test this week.

Re: For God's sake, drop Brad Haddin

It's funny reading how CA want to dump Cam White as 20/20 captain despite being more than decent in his time in the Australian 20/20 team because -- get this -- of stuff he said recently about the Big Bash tournament and bad form in the hit and giggle format, yet Haddin gets chance after chance after chance despite screwing up at TEST level.

It's amazing isn't it: if you're not a favourite of CA, you can get dumped simply for saying stuff they don't agree with and use your Big Bash form as a justification, but if you're a favourite, they'll stick by you despite two years of playing shit in TEST matches, and use all kinds of Mickey Mouse games to justify your inclusion.

In the same way Hodgey never got picked for the Australian 20/20 team in the last few years despite being (then) in the top 3 20/20 batsmen in the world, but Clarke, who wouldn't even have been picked by an IPL team, was left in there for 3 years as captain.

I mean, it really is astounding that some people like Haddin -- easily close to the WORST wicketkeeper in first class cricket -- can't even get dropped no matter what they do or don't do, while CA are looking for any excuse to drop someone like White at a drop of a hat, simply for saying the so-called 'wrong thing' (the same thing that apparently led to Hodgey being frozen out of the Test scene). As if we needed any confirmation that selection for Australia depends more on who you're mates with and how well you 'kowtow' to the powers-that-be (something the Vics have never been good at, and rightly so -- we were not brought up to be arse lickers) than performance.

Different regime, same old crap. F**k the baggy green**, let's bring home the Shield.

** (and the meaningless 20/20 world cup, for that matter)

The following paragraph from the semi final Big Bash report doesnt back up your statement.

"And Collingwood received a massive reprieve on 2 when he charged and missed a Shane Warne delivery, only for wicketkeeper Matthew Wade to fumble what should have been the easiest of stumpings."
