AT LEAST FOUR RIVALS CIRCLE THE BLUE COACH KEEN TO KEEP

While Carlton coach Michael Voss has declared he “absolutely” wants to keep Mitch McGovern at the club, at least four other sides have flagged their interest in trading for the out-of-contract swingman.
McGovern did not have his deal for 2026 triggered after the club chose not to select him, while healthy, for the final games of the season.

It means the soon-to-be 31-year-old with 145 AFL games under his belt, 48 at Adelaide and 97 at Carlton, has an uncertain future.
The Blues have not yet offered McGovern a contract for 2026 and will weigh up whether they want to delist or trade him, reports The Age.

The Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne, Essendon and Brisbane have all inquired about his services.
He has only played a full season once, in his debut 2016 season at the Crows, with only one other season playing more than 18 games - the 2023 campaign when he played 22 times - due to a combination of injuries and form.

Not looking like a great off-season in terms of player acquisition. If we don't get in a key back or two I don't think 2026 will be much different to 2025.... or 2024, 2023, 2022. Jordan butts has to be a target... even (it makes me sick to say) Jake Lever.

We make grand finals pretty much at the same rate as Geelong, but on the plus side every time we make a prelim we make a grand final. Imagine telling a player he has to lose a minimum of two preliminary finals for every grand final he makes. Massive deterrent!

Is Mitch McGovern worse than what we have?

We can all think of every reason not to bring him to the club, and we shouldn't if all of those reasons outweigh the amount he could improve us. But if he improves us why wouldn't we bring him in?

Yeah I was willing to suspend my sense of disbelief and pretend Tylar Young was good for an off season but McGovern is just too depressing.

We've seriously gone from Wilkie to McGovern in the space of 3 days?

McGovern feels like hoping McDougall was our KPF saviour.

The comparison crossed my mind. Not gonna lie.

I just can't think of which medium defender we have on the list who is better than him. Not saying I actually want him but if he's all that's there and we think he can play a role then we may as well do it. Otherwise if we're prepared to develop our own then so be it.

Ewww, you forget how much this time of year sucks. All the wanky destination clubs pick the eyes out of the market and we're left with whatever scraps are around.
