PREMIERSHIP DEMON TOLD TO SEEK TRADE

Melbourne has reportedly told 2021 premiership defender Steven May to seek a trade.

May, an All-Australian backman in 2021 and 2022, has another year to run on his current contract, but the Dees can’t guarantee the 33-year-old will be a regular senior player in 2026, per Nine’s Tom Morris.

“Melbourne has told premiership defender Steve May to look for a third club,” Morris wrote on social media platform X on Thursday morning.

“The Demons are keen to play youth in his position and can’t guarantee May senior games in 2026, which is the last year of his contract.”

Forward-turned-defender Daniel Turner emerged in Melbourne’s back six this year, while 21-year-old one-gamer Jed Adams projects as a long-term key-position pillar.

It comes just days after Geelong assistant Steven King was announced as the Demons’ new senior coach.

The Western Bulldogs, who could make a play for Adelaide’s Jordon Butts amid a need for key-defensive reinforcement, were recently urged to pursue May if he was gettable this off-season.

The Dogs, who ranked ninth this season for defending turnover, have also been linked to out-of-contract Tigers defender Tylar Young.

North Melbourne is another of the clubs reportedly eyeing Young and could also benefit from May’s services as a veteran figure in a wobbly Roos backline.

SWAN TO REQUEST TRADE TO PIES

Sydney forward Jack Buller is set to request a trade to Collingwood, reports AFL Media’s Callum Twomey.

The Magpies, who have a connection to Buller with footy boss/ex-Swans head of football Charlie Gardiner, have reportedly tabled a two-year deal to the 24-year old.

Buller is out of contract but still can only move clubs via trade.

“He’s going to request a trade is my expectation to Collingwood from Sydney,” Twomey said on Gettable.

“He has a two-year offer on the table there (from Collingwood) and he’s met with them in recent days.

“Charlie Gardiner is the link there, having been at the Swans now at the Pies.”

Buller has booted 11 goals from 10 games for Sydney — including nine appearances under Dean Cox this year — since joining the club in the 2023 mid-season draft.

Twomey questioned if it meant Brody Mihocek, whose future at Collingwood is uncertain amid interest form Melbourne, was facing the exit door.

“I think it also points to Brody Mihocek. Is he (Mihocek) out the door, and is (Buller) the replacement?,” he posed.

I get the feeling that we'll be cutting off another teams fringe again in the trade period. We've got 0 chance at Wilkie, the only real player we seem to have taken a swing at, the others we're linked with are tagged in with numerous other clubs which rarely go our way.

So we're now linked to Young? Proof the media doesn't know what's happening with us.

I'd rather Jones go around again if we are looking at cooked key backs.
              The curse is dead.

In terms of total football output I feel that May has crested the mountain and is sliding down the other side fast. I thought he became more and more unreliable as the season progressed and it wasn't just his body that let him down his footy IQ slowed down significantly as well. He regularly took the wrong option so many times this season and worse than that he failed to execute which put his team under way too much pressure. If we're not playing Jones there's no way we are picking up May, no chance and I think the club unofficially came out and said we're not interested 3 weeks ago.

I hope the club believe May is cooked mentally and physically and wouldn't be surprised to hear they have question marks around his attitude and buy in as well. I kind of feel culturally we are in a good space and I'm not overly keen to add a drop of poison to what is shaping up to be a pretty hearty looking dish.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

We've been linked to Young for a while but whether it's factual or just the media linking us to every possible key back is uncertain. May certainly seems like media conjecture more than anything solid.

The only links I've seen are from hopeful fans.

There was an article last week or so that said we had no interest in/hadn't approached Young.

Apparently, he is exploring his options... with Melbourne funnily enough.

There have definitely been media articles linking us, but quite possibly it's just speculation. eg this from a couple of weeks ago:
North Melbourne, Western Bulldogs and West Coast chasing Richmond defender Tylar Young

I find it extremely surprising 24 hours on that nobody from the Wilkie or Saints camp has commented on the article regarding a phone conversation with Bevo..

Every journo would have been looking for a quote or more information but there has been nothing.
