Re: Early Trade Rumours for 2022

Has Jone's reputation as a player been enhanced since he retired?

He's worth having a chat to but his no vax position could still be a hurdle and I wouldn't say this is much more than media speculation.

I can just imagine to conversations…

Dodo to Jones “we want you to be our CHB for next 2-3 years”

Dogs to Jones “we want you to play backline for next 2-3 years but if English gets injured you might find yourself chf, ruck or even dropped if you have 2-3 bad games”.
I will never see #16 the same!!

I wonder how many times he went off the field injured and the Dr said "I'll just give you this injection and you'll be right to play" and he never questioned it .

I wonder how many end of season trips to Bali he went on where the Dr said, "I'll just give you this injection and you'll be right to play" and never questioned it.

I'm conflicted on him over this: on one hand I have respect that he stuck to his guns on what he said he was going to do, but in the other hand I do think he's a moron for having that stance at all.

Otherwise I agree with the rest of what you've said - I always liked him as a player and I'm glad he went on to succeed personally at the Blues. I'm really undecided if he's what we need, given he's already quite "old".

I'm not sure it has. I don't think anyone on here specifically is saying he's the next coming of Geoff Southby but he's a solid defender with good closing speed, a decent leap and adequate disposal.

Considering it's a significant area of need for us it's seems like a no brainer to at least trial him.

I'm pretty sure that's not how a conversation with Jones pans out.
I feel your frustration with an inconsistent selection process but don't underestimate how much we want to address getting a ready made KPD to the club.

I understand. I’m just frustrated that year after year our lack of height in defence is spoken about…and when we do something about (not Keath) we pick up O’Brien who last year played the best game of his life….against US.

If it’s true that we are looking at a fwd to turn defender then that just proves how desperate we are, and as far as I’m concerned if I see either of Schache, Gardner or Cordy in our back 6 round 1 2023, then we have failed, especially when names like McGovern, Barass, Logue, Pierce, Paine and Jones, are being thrown around.

Really appreciate the nuanced reply on an issue that is anything but the black and white one it is portrayed to be in the media.

My personal opinion of his decision is of no consequence to Jones, but I deeply respect that he made a decision with real skin in the game that impacted his very livelihood, and he did so in silence without sermonising or proclaiming victimhood status. I think that shows he is a man of his convictions and it shows integrity. Nobody yet knows whether his decision will fall on the right or the wrong side of history - those chapters have not played out and I suspect they won't for a very long time.

As a player, he could be of real value with his skill set in the short term. But it is flying blind without knowing what restrictions there might be for those who haven't complied with previous regulations, and whether or not these regulations will be scrapped or retained/tightened. For that reason, it is a risk not worth taking until such time as there is absolute clarity from City Hall and from the jurisdictions that govern our states/territories and the country.

So with Grundy being shopped around from the pies, how do we feel as a potential fit for him?

At his best he was sensational but he seems to have struggled the last couple of years (not such if this is injury related or form). Still only 28. If we can get him at the right price in a similar deal to Treloar (where the Pies pay part of his wage) then why not I say. A pairing with English, on paper, would be a great combination

We are backing English in to be our number 1 ruckman, no way do we commit a large whack of the salary cap to Grundy. Even if the Pies were paying some it would still be big dollars. Not to mention the significant trade price they would demand. We have more pressing needs.

I think there's more chance of Pauline Hanson being appointed our NGA manager than Grundy being at the dogs next year.
