    Frustrating game.

Wasn’t especially good footy in the humid, slippery conditions and I thought we were poor outside of three bursts to stay in the contest at different points. The final flurry was exceptional in some ways, but fruitless.

You would throw the toys out of the cot after the loss, but it might show there’s still some very important growth needed. In game injuries and the disruption in selection as a returning player like Treloar stays home might have told some of the story there. need a lot to go right and can’t really expect a Harvey Gallagher, Cleary, Freijah, Poulter to nail it every time (some we are building that expectation though and it’s great.) Just a few times where I felt the wrong player was on the end of the chain, and it hurt.

Might as well not have Naughton out there at the moment, he is trying and clearly building a base after the interruption to his preseason but was on the field most of the game, barely got near it and when he did fluffed it. Have some admiration for his efforts and mentality in a rough season for him as a senior player, but it’s a bad look at the moment.

I believe that our turnover stats were largely because of our unfamiliarity with the slippery conditions. So many times, we mishandled the ball or dropped simple marks. We are a high possession team, and have a high reliance on our slick hands, for a major part of our game. I am not sure that the turnovers are indicative of a systemic breakdown in our game.

Yep. They also seemed to score easier once they went inside 50. They intercepted our entries quite easily at different stages.

              GC - 62 inside 50's - 31 scoring shots = 50%
              US - 49 inside 50's - 26 scoring shots = 53%

Happy to ride off a loss to a potential top 4 side in Darwin, and move on.
To also get out of there with the percentage in-tact is helpful.
My main concern is that there is a down game Vs the Dons, and it turns into 2 losses, which could be out of their control; they will either have the legs or they won't.
Can anyone tell me, what Gallagher had done in the VFL to justify being kicked again? I just don't see what he is bringing to the AFL team.

Would assume 28 disposals and 2 goals would have played a role. Didn't see his game myself so can't comment on much beyond that

VFL stats don't mean a lot, though.
I would like to know what they see, that says he is an AFL level player, to be picked so often, and brought back in due to......

                      Coaches Votes

                      10 Libba
                      6 Ed
                      4 Miller
                      3 Humphrey
                      3 JOD
                      2 Anderson
                      1 Noble
                      1 King

The only valid combination (that my brain can calcuate)

                      Libba (5+5)
                      Ed (4+2)
                      Miller (0+4)
                      Humphrey (3+0)
                      JOD (0+3)
                      Anderson (2+0)
                      Noble (1+0)
                      Kind (0+1)

This means the only two players that the two coaches agreed on were Libba and Ed.

Naughton is a real concern a player of that level of ability should not be as bad as he's been most weeks regardless how interrupted his preseason has been.

We are now 9 weeks in and he has more than half a dozen preseasons under his belt but he looks like a big mature aged state league dude out there.

With loss of Darcy and Jamarra we really need more from him.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

He's quick and powerful. And we need legspeed.
It's hard to judge a guy on his time in the game if he's subbed on late.

I have real concerns over his field kicking and I'm not sure I would have played him, but judging him on a few minutes in the Darwin game is harsh.

I am commenting more on what he has produced in all of his AFL games so far, and when he was sent to the VFL, it seemed like good timing to give him a sustained period there to work on his game. So to be picked again in the AFL team so quickly, surprised me, and his production will likely just be what it has been in the past, regardless of being sub, playing in Darwin or anything else.

Once he is on an AFL field, I don't think he profiles as a quick or powerful player either, he may test that way, however it is not translating.

I think we need to give Gallagher time. This is season 3 for him, but in reality it's season2 as his first season was a write off. I like what he brings, but he does need to tidy up bits and pieces, not unike McNeil has had to, and Riley West and VdM.

I'm on board with all this, don't really rate Gags as an AFL player at this stage but when you look at his healthy competition for a spot:
                                - Duryea - too old, can only play one position, no speed
                                - Luke Kennedy - young, had his best VFL game on the weekend, will likely be pushing Gags out by end of season, hasn't played backline.
                                - Jaques - similar to Kennedy
                                - Tony Scott - the best alternative imo, but has had injury troubles so might not have been ready. Will be putting pressure on.
                                - Hynes, Dolan - young, had chances but no impact, can only play limited roles.
                                - Baker - viable alternative but has plenty of downsides too. I would have picked him over gags as I have more confidence he will provide a strong contest.
                                - Arty - has had chances and let them slip, limited number of roles.
                                - Gardner, Coffield, Smith, Buss - can't play the same role.

Rightly or wrongly, Gags is seen as being able to play def, mid, fwd. He has pace. His tackling is okay. His ball use is average. Until Scott gets fit (which he might be now), or Kennedy/Jaques put pressure on, Gags is just about our best option for a 23rd player.
